Watzke: Dortmund right to stop Bayern signing Lewandowski

The BVB chief says a glance at the top goalscorers chart proves they were right not to sell the Pole and admitted die Roten are the best in the world

Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke has said his side were right to deny Robert Lewandowski the chance to join Bayern Munich in the summer.

The forward has been racking up the goals again this season and is currently the league’s top goal scorer having netted 11 times for the Schwarzgelben this season, including a double in BVB’s 3-1 win over Mainz on Saturday.

The Polish striker was constantly linked with a move to Bayern throughout the transfer window an,d even though he is expected to leave Signal Iduna Park in 2014 for the Allianz Arena, Watzke believes Dortmund made the correct decision.

“If you look in the newspaper you can see who the top scorer in Germany is,” the club CEO told ZDF.

“Maybe it was the right decision not to let him leave.”

Lewandowksi’s double against Mainz helped Jurgen Klopp’s side back to winning ways after the side suffered back-to-back Bundesliga defeats to Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich.

BVB still sit seven points behind the Bavarians in the league and Watzke admitted that his team are some way off their more illustrious rivals in terms of infrastructure and development.

“Bayern are the best team in the world right now, as a sportsman one must acknowledge this fact,” he accepted.

“They’ve done a good job for 50 years now, they are 30 years ahead of us and we have to live with that.

“I am glad for them. I’d prefer a German team to be the best rather than a Spanish one.”
