Boateng: Bayern's downfall started against Dortmund

The German defender believes his side have been going downhill since the DFB-Pokal semi-final defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s men and hopes to end on a high with a win over Mainz

Jerome Boateng says Bayern Munich’s downfall in the closing weeks of the season began with their DFB-Pokal defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

After securing the Bundesliga title, Bayern lost to Jurgen Klopp’s men on penalties in the last four of the cup and have won only one of the subsequent five games – a 3-2 win over Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final tie that they lost 5-3.

Boateng feels Pep Guardiola’s side have continued to lose a lot of momentum in the run in to the end of the campaign and wants to end it on a high note with a win over Mainz in the last game of the season.

“We are no longer moving so quickly,” he told Kicker. “It started against Dortmund and kept going.

“We now have one game left and we want to be get a positive result from it.”

The Bavarian side host Mainz at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
