Heynckes said he was looking forward to “a fantastic match for the crowd and the fans.” Despite the do-or-die nature of the fixture, the 66-year-old does not believe the outcome will settle the title race. “We’ll only know who to call champions after the last day. Even after Wednesday, a whole lot can still happen,” Heynckes declared. FCB captain Philipp Lahm agreed: “Obviously, it’s a crucial match, and we can go back to the top of the table. But there are still a few games to go afterwards.”

Bastian Schweinsteiger, who returned to the starting line-up against Augsburg on Saturday, felt the winners on Wednesday would have “a minor advantage.” Chairman Rummenigge is certain that Heynckes’ men will “go for it with everything they’ve got, and that’s quite a lot. Let’s wait and see if it’s enough.” The countdown has started towards the titanic midweek showdown.

On April 9, 2012

Saturday’s narrow 2-1 home victory over FC Augsburg, Bayern’s ninth straight win in all competitions, means the gap to Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund remains constant at just three points, and sees the men in red brimming with confidence ahead of Wednesday’s crunch trip to face the champions. All in all, it is a happy Easter in Munich.

“It was a tough match and a vital win. All credit to the team,” said Christian Nerlinger after the enthralling encounter in front of the customary capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena. “We’ve won nine times in a row at the highest imaginable level, so we’re travelling to Dortmund in very confident spirits,” the director of sport continued.

Heynckes said!

On April 4, 2012

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “It was a great display from our team. We controlled the match and deservedly won. We’re in good shape. Fortunately, we’re still in contention in all three competitions. We’re taking them all seriously, and we’re well set up for these “Bavarian weeks”, which is what we’re going through now. We have a match every three or four days, so you need strong nerves – and I do believe that’s what we have.”

Jupp Heynckes: “Making the semi-final is a great success at this stage of the season. We were very focused, despite the huge number of games we have to get through at the moment. Manuel Neuer saved us a couple of times in the first half, but we came back strongly, and at the end of the day, we deserved the victory. Marseille didn’t make the quarter-finals by accident. After all, they knocked out strong opposition like Dortmund and Inter Milan.”

Ivica Olic: “It’s a good feeling. I’m a very experienced player, but the stress before kick-off was positive. It’s always special when you play in the Champions League. I’m delighted we’ve won and I’ve scored.”

Didier Deschamps (Marseille coach): “This hurdle was definitely too high. We tried to make the best of our situation, but Bayern have rightly become one of the four best teams in Europe. We knew it would be difficult after our dismal performance at home, but it’s still been a terrific adventure and we’ve played magnificently. It was a privilege to play such a great team in such a great stadium.”

Bayern win!

On March 31, 2012

Arjen Robben was the hero as Bayern made it seven wins on the bounce in all competitions and moved to within three points of Bundesliga leaders Dortmund with a narrow but deserved success away to FC Nürnberg on Saturday. It was the kind of victory that can win championships, as FCB found the going tough at times against stubborn FCN, but never let up their attacking efforts and were rewarded with the points.

The 48,548 full house at Easy-Credit-Stadion for the 184th all-Bavaria derby saw the home side hassle and niggle at their patently more skilled opponents and effectively stifle Bayern’s normal passing game for long spells, as a first half light on chances ended goalless.

Mario Gomez had a perfectly good goal disallowed on a poor offside call midway through the second period, but Robben broke the deadlock with 20 minutes to go and the men from Munich held on through a frantic closing phase to register what could prove an utterly vital win.

With six games to go in the 34-match season, the result takes Bayern onto 60 points, now only three off Dortmund and seven clear of third-placed Schalke, who visit Hoffenheim on Sunday. FCB’s next match is the decisive Champions League quarter-final second leg against Olympique Marseille at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, before another all-Bavaria affair in the league when Augsburg visit Munich next Saturday.

Bayern win!

Bayern were made to work hard for victory, but a determined team display and some ruthless finishing saw the Reds run up a 2–0 success away to Olympique Marseille in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. “After you’ve thrown the door to the semi-finals wide-open, you have to offer huge compliments to the team,” said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, “the team’s done very well.” Jupp Heynckes spoke of “great composure,” and Mario Gomez felt the win was “fully deserved,” but Philipp Lahm issued a warning: “We’re not through yet.”

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “I think we can be very satisfied. After you’ve won the first leg of a quarter-final in the Champions League 2–0 away from home and thrown the door to the semi-finals wide open, you have to offer huge compliments to the team. Right from the start, we went looking for the away goal we needed to set us up for the return. At the end of the day we’ve scored two and let in none, so the team’s done very well.”

Jupp Heynckes: “We showed great composure today, which isn’t easy here in Marseille, as other teams have found. It was important to keep a clean sheet, which stopped Marseille working up a head of steam. We did very well, with just a handful of exceptions. The only thing I have to complain about is that we picked up five yellow cards, which is far too many.”
