Bayern Munich Targeting Dayot Upamecano If Lucas Hernandez Move Falls Through

?Bayern Munich have identified RB Leipzig centre back Dayot Upamecano as a viable alternative if they fail to complete a deal for Lucas Hernandez next summer.

The German champions had hoped to get a deal done for Atletico Madrid defender Hernandez in January, but the Frenchman’s release clause proved problematic and Bayern were unwilling to match it.

CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has already hinted that ?Bayern will try again for Hernandez at the end of the season, but they must be prepared in case the move breaks down once more.

?Spo?rtBild claims that Bayern’s Plan B is Upamecano, a younger French defender but one who has the potential to do great things in the future for club and country.

He was reportedly offered to Bayern before he joined Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2017, but Michael Reschke, the club’s technical director at the time, turned down the opportunity.

Upamecano was one of five Bundesliga players, including RB Leipzig teammate Marcelo Saracchi, to be nominated for the Golden Boy award in 2018.

Dayot Upamecano

Upamecano’s ability is reflected in Leipzig’s defensive record this season, which is the joint best in the league alongside Borussia Monchengladbach.

He has recently been linked with a surprise move to ?Southampton after former Leipzig manager Ralph Hasenhuttl took over at St Mary’s Stadium, but the chances are that Upamecano will join a Champions League club when he leaves the Red Bull Arena.

Upamecano has played over 30 times for France at various youth levels but is yet to make his senior debut for Les Bleus.

Champions League Last 16 Squads Announced as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Returns for Liverpool

?Liverpool have named Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in their squad for the last 16 of the Champions League, hinting that the Englishman may return in time to face Bayern Munich.

Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t played since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the semi finals of last season’s Champions League, but he has made good progress recently. He is unlikely to be available in time for the first leg at Anfield on 19 February, but the second leg at the Allianz Arena on 13 March may be achievable.

Ki-Jana Hoever has also been added to Liverpool‘s squad, while there is also a place on the list for Ben Woodburn. The changes were announced on UEFA’s official website on Tuesday along with the remaining sides left in the competition.?

Premier League rivals Tottenham have added centre back Juan Foyth to their squad for the last 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund. Foyth played against APOEL in last season’s competition but wasn’t included in the squad for this season’s group stage.

Mauricio Pochettino has not added Vincent Janssen to his squad, despite vowing that the Dutchman would now be considered for selection after failing to win a January transfer.

Vincent Janssen

?Manchester City have added Claudio Bravo and Philippe Sandler to their squad to face Schalke, while ?Manchester United did not add any new players ahead of their tie with Paris Saint-Germain.

Most of the squad changes are related to player purchases or sales, with ?Barcelona adding Kevin-Prince Boateng, Jeison Murillo and Moussa Wague to their squad. The injured Rafinha has been removed though, suggesting his season is most likely over.

Bayern Munich have added Canadian youngster Alphonso Davies to their squad, while holders Real Madrid have drafted in new signing Brahim Diaz.

Neighbourhood rivals Atletico Madrid have added Alvaro Morata to their ranks following his 18-month loan move from Chelsea, while there is place in Schalke’s squad for teenage sensation Rabbi Matondo, signed from Manchester City in the transfer window for a fee of £11.3m.

In addition to the named individuals, the competition’s regulations allow teams to name an unlimited number of players born on, or after 1 January 1997, who have played for the club for over two years.

The first ties of the last 16 will be played on 12 February, with the return legs being played three weeks later.

6 Clubs Who Have Bought Multiple Players From the Same Team

Such is the pressure of modern day football, elite clubs must continuously sign the best talent on the market.

Over the past decade a trend has developed in which certain sides will continue to revisit and sign a certain clubs players following successful (in some cases) arrivals.

It’s a method that is not only practiced by the so-called ‘big-teams’ pinching smaller clubs players, but by top level rivals – as evidenced by Bayern Munich’s relentless poaching of talent from Bundesliga foes Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern are not the only team to do it though, as we find out here with a look at six clubs that continue to revisit familiar transfer territory.

1. Southampton to Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk

Players Signed: Adam Lallana (£25m), Rickie Lambert (£4m), Nathaniel Clyne (£12.5m), Dejan Lovren (£25m), Sadio Mane (£34m), Virgil van Dijk (£75m).

Liverpool have used Southampton as somewhat of a feeder club in recent times, prising six Saints players away within the past five seasons.

The majority of the signings have proven to be success stories, with the acquisition of Virgil van Dijk for a chunky £75m fee proving, so far, to be one of Liverpool’s best transfer dealings of the 21st Century.

Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana are three other success stories for the Reds, with Mane in particular taking his game to a whole new level since arriving at Anfield. Things haven’t always worked out though, as evidenced by Rickie Lambert’s short, and ultimately disastrous, spell on Merseyside.

2. Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich

FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-BAYERN-LEIPZIG

Players Signed: Mario Gotze (£30m), Robert Lewandowski (Free), Mats Hummels (£32m), Torsten Frings (Undisclosed).

Bayern Munich have a history of pinching the best players from their Bundesliga rivals, keeping that arms length in the title race as a result. The most high profile side to suffer at the hands of the Bavarians are Dortmund, with no less than four high profile players departing the Westfalenstadion in recent times.

Torsten Frings was the first to depart for Munich way back in 2004, though his stay would prove to be a rather short one with Die Roten. Mario Gotze was next up just under a decade later, moving to Bayern after putting in a number of dazzling displays for Dortmund.

They paid £30m to snap up Gotze but didn’t need to part with any cash twelve months later when they snared Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer – with his signing proving to be one of the best in the club’s history. Mats Hummels followed two years later, returning to the club he left in 2008 for a reported fee of £32m.

3. Ajax to Tottenham

Christian Eriksen

Players Signed: Jan Vertonghen (£12.5m), Christian Eriksen (£11.5m), Davinson Sanchez (£40m).

Tottenham have captured three players from Dutch giants Ajax during the past six seasons, with all three of them going on to form the core nucleus of Mauricio Pochettino’s ever improving side.

Jan Vertonghen was the first to make the switch back in the 2012/13 campaign, and he was followed a season later by creative genius Christian Eriksen a year later.

With the pair settled in north London, they were joined by a third arrival from Ajax last season – in the form of Davinson Sanchez. The £40m Colombian was relatively unknown prior to his arrival, but has impressed in all of facets of the game since earning a regular place in Pochettino’s side.

4. Barcelona to Chelsea

Cesc Fabregas

Players Signed: Juliano Belletti (Undisclosed), Deco (£10m), Cesc Fabregas (£32m), Pedro (£27m).

Chelsea have surprisingly signed more players from Barcelona (seven) than any other club, and along the way have captured some world class talent. Things haven’t always worked out that way though, as evidenced by Winston Bogarde’s move to Stamford Bridge back in the late 1990s.

More recently, the Blues captured full-back and Champions League final goalscorer Juliano Belletti despite his advancing years. He was joined at the club by Deco a year later, with the Portuguese midfielder’s arrival being heralded as one of the signings of the 2008/09 season.

Things didn’t pan out too well for him, but they did for Cesc Fabregas five years later when he signed for a fee of £32m. The former Arsenal midfielder helped the Blues win two Premier League crowns during his stay with the club, before departing the club this past January.

Chelsea’s other notable signing from Barça comes in the thought of Pedro, who was reportedly close to joining the process Manchester United in the process.

5. Monaco to Manchester United

FBL-FRA-LIGUE1-MONACO-TOULOUSE

Players Signed: Fabian Barthez (£7.8m), Patrice Evra (£7m), Radamel Falcao (£6m Loan Fee), Anthony Martial (£58m).

Manchester United have signed world class talent from all over the globe during the past two decades, with a number of talent plucked from the principality of Monaco.

The Red Devils have signed four players from France, beginning with the signing of goalkeeper Fabian Barthez who established himself as the club’s number one goalkeeper over four seasons.

His arrival was followed by Patrice Evra in 2005, with the full-back going on to win five Premier League titles and a Champions League crown. Radamel Falcao was next up for a short, unsuccessful spell at the club, with Anthony Martial completing the quartet.

He joined for a whopping £58m back in the summer of 2015, and after a few seasons of struggle, finally looks to be fulfilling his potential. Recently signed a new five-year deal too.

6. Chelsea to Arsenal

Petr Cech

Players Signed: William Gallas (Swap), Lassana Diarra (£3m), Yossi Benayoun (Loan), Petr Cech (£11m).

The Gunners have pinched four players from their London rivals over the past fifteen years, most recently capturing Petr Cech after he was replaced by Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal.

The rivals transfer business began with the rather ugly pursuit of Ashley Cole back in 2006, that ultimately led to the arrival of William Gallas at the Emirates Stadium.

Lassana Diarra was the next to make the move on the cheap less than a year later, with Yossi Benayoun’s loan move four years later the next deal concluded by the two clubs. Cech’s arrival though was the most high profile switch between the two sides, given that the Czech international was still regarded as a world class goalkeeper at the time.

Bayern Sporting Director Speaks Out on His ‘Love’ for Chelsea Starlet Callum Hudson-Odoi

?Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has joked that he is ‘only in love with his wife’ after claims from the club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge that he had fallen in love with the Chelsea winger.

The 18-year-old was heavily linked with a move to the Bavarian giants throughout the January window, with much of the speculation surrounding the move coming from Salihamidzic’s ostentatious public interest in the player.

Hasan Salihamidzic

Such were the potency of the director’s desires to land the player that ?Bayern CEO Rummenigge told press (via ?Goal) that he ‘nearly fell in love’ with the player.

“I have to say that he nearly fell in love with this player and his qualities. All the other things were rumours.

FBL-ENG-PR-CHELSEA-HUDDERSFIELD

“We don’t have any demand on these positions for the second half of the season. This is a topic for the future. We’ll handle it in the next months and will decide.”

But Salihamidzic himself has jokingly refuted the claims, saying that there is only one object of desires – and it isn’t an 18-year-old ?Chelsea player.

“You know the only one I’m in love with is my wife,” he insisted.

“But I am very, very convinced of the qualities this player has. He has a finesse which we need to play good, successful and sometimes even spectacular football.”

His comments by no means rule out a move for the player in the summer, so the love-in between the two could well spill over into the next transfer window.

Thomas Muller to Miss UCL Clash Against Liverpool After Suspension Appeal Is Rejected

Thomas Muller is set to miss both legs of? Bayern Munich’s Champions League last 16 clash against Liverpool after his suspension appeal was rejected by UEFA.

The Germany international was handed a two-match European ban back in December, when he was sent off in Bayern’s 3-3 draw with Ajax in the Champions League group stage for kicking Nicolas Tagliafico in the head.

FBL-EUR-C1-AJAX-BAYERN-MUNICH

The 29-year-old appealed against the decision in a bid to be available for at least one of the German side’s knockout games against the Reds.

However, Sport Bild journalist ?Christian Falk has now confirmed that Muller’s application was rejected, meaning Niko Kovac will not be able to call upon the forward for either the first leg at Anfield on 19 February, or even the second leg at the Allianz Arena on 13 March.

The German’s sending off was the first of ?Muller’s professional career, and after the incident, took to social media to offer his apologies to Tagliafico.

The ?Bayern academy product is in to his 11th campaign with the ?Bundesliga champions, and has scored five times in 28 appearances this season.

After facing Hertha Berlin in the third round of the DFB Cup, Bayern face Schalke and Augsburg in Bundesliga action before taking on Jurgen Klopp’s ?Liverpool in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League clash.
