Bayern Munich Star Robert Lewandowski Explains His Ballon d’Or Selection Frustrations

?Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski has insisted that the Ballon d’Or holds little importance to him, and that the process of identifying the final list of candidates often leaves him ‘shocked’.

The 29-year-old striker is undoubtedly one of Europe’s best strikers after scoring 122 goals in 158 matches for Bayern, and despite being named in the 30-man shortlist for the 2017 Ballon d’Or, Lewandowski admits the award barely holds his attention.

With Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi holding a duopoly over the award for a decade, the 29-year-old – like many – have hardly had a look-in.

Speaking to ?ESPN Lewandowski spoke of his frustrations with the honour which is awarded to the best male player of the year, he said: “I wouldn’t say it was that important to me.

“Success at Bayern is more important, especially in the Champions League. If we reach the Champions League final and win the Bundesliga, we can speak again, but the Ballon d’Or is never my focus.”

He added: “I don’t know why some players get 50th, 5th or 25th place.

“Only the first three places are important. That is why last year I was a little bit… how should I say… shocked.

“Because if you play for Bayern Munich and are playing Champions League semi finals and scoring a lot of goals in the Bundesliga and you’re second top scorer in the Champions League…

“I don’t know what place I was [Lewandowski finished 16th in 2016] but it was a little bit funny – maybe funny is the right word.”

Bayern Munich have struggled so far this season, and will return to domestic action against SC Freiburg on Saturday under new coach Jupp Heynckes who replaced the sacked Carlo Ancelotti.

Former Chile Manager Reveals Arturo Vidal Is ‘Not in Control’ After World Cup Failure

Jorge Sampaoli has revealed that the Chilean national team have a number of problems within the squad that have been visible since his days as their manager, according to AS.

The 57-year-old Argentine earnt a name for himself whilst in charge of Club Universidad de Chile and was rewarded with the Chilean national team job in November 2012.

Sampaoli went on to manage La Liga side Sevilla during the 2016/17 season, however, he returned to international football after being given the chance to take control of Argentina.

None of them were at the right level for the qualifying campaign we had in front of us,” Sampaoli said of his former side.

“[Arturo Vidal] requires a medical specialist. He likes to drink and is not in control. When we were on the plane back from Lima, he asked me if he could open a bottle of beer he had bought at the airport. I told him no, as directors and others were coming.

“With the help of the chauffeur, he and some others still got their hands on a bottle of whisky, which I had to dismiss even though I knew that the culprit was Vidal.”

Vidal has, following Chile’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, taken the decision to retire from international football.

“[Alexis Sánchez] wakes up with his headphones on and sits alone for breakfast, not talking to anyone,” Sampaoli added about more of the Chilean squad. “[Claudio Bravo] attempts to head up the squad but it’s the rest of the ‘Pitillo gang’ who actually lead the team.”

The Pitillo gang – a group of friends in the Chile squad – include the likes of Bravo (Manchester City), Vidal (Bayern Munich), Jorge Valdivia (Colo-Colo) and Gary Medel (Be?ikta?) amongst others.

Picking the Best Potential Bayern Munich Lineup to Face SC Freiburg on Saturday

Bayern Munich will return to Bundesliga action on Saturday, where the Bavarians welcome SC Freiburg to the Allianz Arena, with a new man sat in the dugout.

Following the club’s decision to sack Carlo Ancelotti after the Italian’s disappointing start to the season, club icon Jupp Heynckes has returned for his fourth spell in charge of the club in a bid to close the gap between Bayern and league-leading Borussia Dortmund.

Here’s how Heynckes could set up for his first game back.

Goalkeeper

  • Ulreich

    Ulreich26

After a disastrous performance against VfL Wolfsburg, in which some tame goalkeeping and a helping hand from the woodwork saw Bayern throw away a 2-0 lead, Sven Ulreich needs to buck up his ideas in the Bayern net.

Defence

  • Kimmich

    Kimmich32

  • Hummels

  • Boateng

    Boateng17

  • Alaba

    Alaba27

David Alaba was believed to be suffering from an ankle injury, however, the Austrian has trained with the first-team and Heynckes will be keen to test out what is (on paper) his best back four.

That will see versatile midfielder Joshua Kimmich stay at right-back and a central partnership of Mats Hummels and Jérôme Boateng.

Midfield

Box-to-box midfielder Arturo Vidal could be forced to miss Bayern’s clash due to a strain on his calf, meaning Heynckes will look towards either Sebastian Rudy or Corentin Tolisso to sit next to Thiago in the middle, the latter of the two summer arrivals likely to get the nod.

Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman will provide Bayern with a lot of variety out wide, while Thomas Müller should sit just behind the No. 9.

Forwards

  • Lewandowski

    Lewandowski9

Not that there needs to be any justification as to why Robert Lewandowski will be leading the line on Saturday, but with 12 goals across all competitions this season there is no one in Bavaria to rival the Polish star.

Fresh off the back of an impressive international campaign, Lewandowski will be hoping to get a few more goals under his belt at the weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti Hints at Possible Premier League Return After Turning Down Italy National Job

Former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has no intention to coach the Italian national team and plans, instead, a return to the Premier League.

Ancelotti is currently enjoying some time off football since being axed by Bayern Munich earlier in September.

His departure from the German outfit followed a harsh 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Champions League and was equally the result of the club’s poor performances in Bundesliga.

According to The Sun, the ex-AC Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager was recently offered the chance to take Gian Piero Ventura’s role as Italy’s new leader since the Azzurri failed to qualify directly for the 2018 World Cup and now have to face the dreaded lottery of the playoffs.

However, he has reportedly turned down such opportunity – although only for the time being – in favour of a Premier League comeback. With the intention to spend the rest of the season on a sabbatical, Ancelotti has postponed his Italy ambitions to another time.

Club managing remains his main interest. The Italian veteran has recently been linked to Arsenal, though rumours would also have him suitable to replace either Jurgen Klopp or Antonio Conte, should they leave Chelsea and Liverpool.

At the time of his sacking, the ex-Bayern Munich coach spoke about his troubled relationship with his Bundesliga players.

“I don’t know if my way of approaching the work is the right one,” he said. “When I left Madrid, they told me I was too close to the players, then Bayern Munich fired me because they said I had a bad rapport with the players.

“Were the players against me? I don’t know. I respected all of them, but as a coach, I have to make a choice to send 11 onto the pitch and seven to the bench. It’s down to the intelligence of the players to accept the choices, and to the club to support their coach.”

Bayern Munich vs Freiburg Preview: Classic Encounter, Key Battle, Team News & More

Following a turbulent few weeks in Bavaria that has seen disappointing results overshadowed by the recent sacking of Carlo Ancelotti as manager, Bayern Munich couldn’t have asked for a better match to return to domestic action with than a home tie against SC Freiburg.

New(ish) manager Jupp Heynckes will be kicking off his fourth spell in charge of the club in the same fixture that, at the end of last season, resulted in Bayern lifting the Bundesliga title.

Here’s everything you need to know about the clash at this Allianz Arena:

Classic Encounter

Bayern Muenchen v SC Freiburg - Bundesliga

For our classic encounter, we’re going to look at the last time SC Freiburg visited the Allianz Arena.
It was a game that largely centred around the retiring Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso, however, some late drama saw Bayern flattered with the final scoreline.
Former Liverpool midfielder Alonso set Arjen Robben up just four minutes into the match and the Dutchman dispatched his chance. Jérôme Boateng was then forced off the pitch through injury in what turned out to be the last talking point of the first half.
Robben turned provider in the second half to assist Arturo Vidal, however, Freiburg quickly halved the deficit through Nils Peterson.
Franck Ribéry put the game to bed for the hosts in added time and with virtually the last touch of the game, Lahm’s long-term replacement Joshua Kimmich nodded the ball into the back of the net to put the icing on the cake and crown Bayern the Bundesliga champions in style.

Key Battle

Robert Lewandowski vs Caglar Söyüncü
FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-DORTMUND-FREIBURG
The prospect of trying to contain Robert Lewandowski is a daunting task for even the most experienced defender, however, it is up to 21-year-old Caglar Söyüncü to take on the Polish striker on Saturday.
A fully-fledged Turkish international, Söyüncü moved to Germany in 2016 for a fee of just over £2m, leaving Turkish side Altinordu.
Despite making 24 Bundesliga appearances last season, in which Söyüncü claimed one assist, the youngster didn’t play against the eventual Bundesliga champions, missing their hosting of Bayern due to an adductor problem as well as being benched on the final day in Bavaria.
This season, Söyüncü has found himself deployed in a back three and a back four. However, he is still yet to partner fellow defensive prodigy Marc Oliver Kempf during this campaign.

Team News

FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-BAYERN-MUNICH-AUDI

Bayern are suffering in the heart of their midfield, with Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal a doubt due to a calf problem.

Franck Ribéry will also be absent from the Bayern Munich squad after suffering a nasty ligament injury that will keep him out until 2018. James Rodríguez, despite being injury free, might not make the cut under Heynckes either, with the sacking of Ancelotti understood to be upsetting the Colombian midfielder.

Bayern Munich Predicted XI: Ulreich, Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Alaba, Thiago, Tolisso, Robben, Müller, Coman, Lewandowski.

SC Freiburg Predicted XI: Schwolow, Stenzel, Schuster, Leinhart, Söyüncü, Günter, Frantz, Hölfer, Niederlechner, Terrazzino, Haberer.

Prediction

FC Bayern Muenchen v VfL Wolfsburg - Bundesliga

Although Bayern should run out comfortable victors in this one, Sven Ulreich could be the chink in the Bavarian’s armour that will see Freiburg return home with at least a point.
An awful mistake in their home match with VfL Wolfsburg, that saw Maxi Arnold score a free-kick from over 30-yards out, will still be fresh in the minds of the home fans and any Freiburg attack will cause tension in the stands.
That being said, Heynckes return should be enough to carry the hosts over the line and bring some much-needed confidence back into the squad.
Prediction: Bayern Munich: 3-1 SC Freiburg
