Martinez must fight for his place, insists Heynckes

Jupp Heynckes has warned Javi Martinez that he will not be securing a place in the Bayern Munich first team without a fight.

The 24-year-old Spain international moved to the Allianz Arena this summer, signing a five-year contract with the German club, who played a Bundesliga record €40 million fee for his services.

He subsequently made his debut in his new side’s 6-1 home win over Stuttgart, appearing as a late substitute for Bastian Schweinsteiger, but will have to work hard for more playing time.

“He’ll be a huge bonus for us in football terms.” Heynckes told the club’s official website. “He gives us even more quality in midfield, which is a motivating factor for everyone.

“But even Javi will have to play and fight his way into the team based on his performance. Obviously he has my full support, just like all the other players.”

Martinez made 201 appearances at San Mames, scoring 22 goals.
