Jupp Heynckes has hailed Bayern Munich’s 5-0 victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday as their “best performance of the season”.
Goals from Mario Mandzukic, Luiz Gustavo and Rafinha, along with a Thomas Muller double, handed the table-toppers a comprehensive three points and the distinction of becoming the first top-flight German club to have won their opening eight matches.
Speaking after the match, the 67-year-old highlighted their impenetrable defence and team spirit as two of the main reasons behind their record-breaking triumph, which puts them five points clear of nearest challengers Eintracht Frankfurt at the league summit.
“I am obviously pleased,” Heynckes said after the match. “We have played from the first until the last minute in front of a fantastic crowd.
“Even more importantly, our defence stood up very well and made no mistakes. One should be able to take their foot off the gas in a game for a minute and maintain their concentration – which we did.
“That was our best performance so far this season. Each player covered for the other. The celebrations for Rafinha’s goal after his introduction reflects the inner workings of the team.”
