Gomez 'elated' to score on Bayern's 5-0 rout of Hannover

Mario Gomez has spoken of his delight at marking his return to the Bayern Munich first team with a goal in the 5-0 victory over Hannover on Saturday.

The Germany international sustained an ankle injury during pre-season and underwent surgery in September, forcing him to miss the first couple of months of the campaign.

However, the striker came off the bench to assist the Bavarians’ equaliser against Valencia in the Champions League in midweek, and rounded off the side’s most recent rout in the Bundesliga.

“It was incredible, I was really elated and I remembered how much football matters to me,” Gomez told reporters after the match.

Meanwhile, Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes hailed his team’s display, claiming they were a class above their opponents at the Allianz Arena and demonstrated an encouraging improvement in defence.

“It was a thoroughly deserved victory and we were top class because we were very assertive and aggressive from the start,” the veteran trainer said.

“We kept it tighter than we have done recently. We needed total concentration, especially in defence, but the team showed that brilliantly for 90 minutes.”

Captain Philipp Lahm also chimed in with a positive account of the German league leaders’ performance, adding: “We were very, very good today. We put them under pressure from the start and it was 3-0 at half-time, but even after that, we didn’t ease back.

“We can be very satisfied. We go to Freiburg on Wednesday with our usual target of winning, but we know it’s a difficult away match.

“We’ve always made hard work of our trip to Freiburg in recent years, so we’ll need to play focused football from the start, just like today.”
