'Schweinsteiger has outstanding abilities' – Low

The Germany boss has praised his experienced playmaker, after Nationalelf legend Gunter Netzer suggested his days as a first-teamer were numbered

Germany coach Joachim Low has defended the abilities of midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger after the Bayern Munich star came in for criticism in the media.

Gunter Netzer, who won the 1974 World Cup with die Mannschaft, had suggested that Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan would soon displace the 28-year-old in the team after impressing in the recent 2-1 win over France.

However, the former Stuttgart boss feels the player is still a valuable part of the squad due to his experience and class.

“Schweinsteiger is very experienced internationally, he has a great aura and presence on the pitch,” the 53-year-old told FAZ.

“He has outstanding abilities, can read the game well and set the rhythm. He displays it at Bayern Munich and did so often enough for the national team as well.”

Schweinsteiger appeared 97 times for his country to date, scoring 23 goals.
