Mandzukic wants trophies over goals

The Croatia international has played down his goalscoring efforts this season and says medals are of greater importance

Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic is unconcerned with finishing his debut season at the club as top scorer, insisting that winning titles is his primary goal.

The former Dinamo Zagreb star currently leads the Allianz Arena scoring stakes with 15 strikes to his name and recently scored his first Champions League goal for FCB against Arsenal.

However, Mandzukic says he has not thought about the prospect of topping the Bavarians’ goalscoring charts and remains focused on the team’s overall thirst for success.

“If it comes to pass I would be happy, of course, but I do not think about it at all,” the 26-year-old told Bayern’s official website.

“I’d rather win a title with the team [and so] I focus on my job, which is to fight on the pitch.”

Mandzukic has overshadowed the likes of Mario Gomez this season, making an instant impact after joining from Wolfsburg, but dismisses any notion of him being a surprise package with the Bundesliga leaders.

“Maybe I have surprised other people who were a bit sceptical, but I have not surprised myself,” he added.

The Bavarians remain in the hunt for a Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal treble.
