The 20-year-old defender is hesitant to discuss how far Dortmund can reach in the competition and says an all-German quarter-final would “be cool”
Borussia Dortmund defender Moritz Leitner says the team are erring on the side of caution regarding their Champions League aspirations ahead of Friday’s quarter-final draw.
The German giants emerged as Group D winner’s having beaten Ajax, Manchester City and Real Madrid en route to the round of 16, before comfortably dispatching Shakhtar Donestsk 5-2 on aggregate.
However, despite rubbing shoulders with some of Europe’s elite clubs, the 20-year-old has played down talk of Dortmund going all the way.
“Talk of the winning the Champions League at this moment is difficult. The title is more of a dream,” he told Spox.com
“For now we are looking to whoever we are drawn against on Friday. We must show we can compete with our quarter-final opponents for 180 minutes.
“If we talk of the title now and our talk does not match our performance, then that would be very, very stupid.”
There could as many as three German teams in the pot for Friday’s draw, with Bayern – 3-1 up against Arsenal after the first leg – hot favourites to progress to the quarter-finals, and Schalke taking an away-goal into Tuesday’s clash with Galatasaray.
“Should it be Bayern or Schalke [we are drawn against], it would certainly be a different feeling, because we have only played international teams,” he added.
“But a German duel would also be cool for the Bundesliga and it would show the quality of the league.”
