JD's Betting Blog: Backing Roma to heap more misery upon hapless Palermo

JD advises on taking on the big sides at this time of year and has two tips for us ahead of this weekend’s fixtures in Serie A and the Bundesliga

The International football has served us well over the last couple of weeks. It has been quieter in the football markets but a more targeted approach can pay dividends. We landed three out of three successful selections last week and we have started this week with an 8/5 (2.60) team goals selection which has set us up nicely for the weekend.

Taking on the big teams at this time of year

With many of the major European leagues already wrapped up, you should look for an angle to oppose the leading teams in each league. Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Juventus enjoy commanding leads at the top of their divisions and it is natural for them to take their foot off the gas in such a cosy position.

Some of these teams will be involved in crucial Champions League matches next week and it’s a good time to be taking on these teams in a hope of making profit. Squad rotation, injuries, fatigue and motivation will come into play at this time of year and the top teams can be more vulnerable. Remember, there are a number of different angles to do this – a straight lay, use of the handicaps or simply backing them to concede. For example, Hamburg are as big as 8/11 (1.73) simply to score a goal against Bayern Munich this weekend. Once they score, you don’t have to worry about the final outcome.

Weekend Tips

Looking ahead to the weekend, Freiburg are as short as evens (2.0) in places at home to Borussia Monchengladbach. It looks a short price on a team who have only won three of their last nine home fixtures. Gladbach are a tough side to beat in the Bundesliga, losing only six from 26, and can be backed at 7/4 (2.75) draw no bet with Paddy Power.

Palermo are winless in 15 matches in Serie A, their worst streak since 1973. The improved Roma are the visitors this weekend and they can collect all three points at 11/10 (2.10) with Paddy Power.
