Watzke slams Dortmund transfer speculation

The BVB general manager says the club is a victim of social media, with negotiations over potential deals becoming public knowledge all too easily

Hans-Joachim Watzke has hit out at the transfer “madness” surrounding Borussia Dortmund.

BVB announced earlier in the week that Mario Gotze would join Bayern Munich in the summer, with a host of potential replacements then touted by the media.

And following reports linking the club with a move for Bayern striker Mario Gomez,  the team’s general manager revealed his anguish at the overwhelming interest in the pursuit of targets.

“The players have even asked me about Mario Gomez. But when I say that I know something, [the media] then say he has been seen [at the club],” Watzke told the WAZ group.

“We are the victims [of social media]. There’s a madness that is widespread and sometimes it’s bad. But we can no longer keep these secrets in the bottle [secret].”

Watzke has also had to deal with growing speculation surrounding striker Robert Lewandowski, following claims by the player’s agent that the Poland international has already agreed terms with another club.

However, Dortmund have so far not been affected on the pitch. They beat Fortuna Dusseldorf 2-0 on Saturday  on the back of Wednesday’s 4-1 thumping of Real Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League semi-final.
