The Borussia Monchengladbach legend believes BVB can wave goodbye to any prospect of lifting silverware next season as two of their star men prepare to leave the club
Former Germany midfielder Gunter Netzer believes Bayern Munich’s signing of Mario Gotze and potential capture of Robert Lewandowski will end Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of success next season.
Die Roten, who maintained their 20-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table with a 1-0 win over Freiburg on Saturday, having already secured the league title, could yet add the Champions League and DFB-Pokal to their list of honours this season.
And after the revelations Bayern have met Borussia Dortmund star Gotze’s €37.5 million release clause, ahead of a summer move, Netzer expressed how impressed he was with the signing and his thoughts on the possibility of Robert Lewandowski following the same path from Signal Iduna Park to the Allianz Arena.
“One title is sure to be followed by two,” he wrote in his Bild column.
“Should Lewandowski leave Dortmund after Gotze, it would be a significant impairment. Of course they’re capable of finding a success-promising substitution. However, they won’t succeed with it initially, the quality of Gotze and Lewandowski is just too big.
“Pep Guardiola will be overjoyed with the personnel policies of his future club. But that was definitely a reason to go to Munich. This trainer, in conjunction with Gotze and Lewandowski, could lead to a long-standing dominance for Bayern.”
Netzer then hailed the respective talents of Gotze and Lewandowski, stating his belief that the former of that pair is incomparable with any other young talent in world football.
“My spontaneous reaction to the transfer of Mario Gotze to Bayern was: ‘What a deal!,'” the 68-year-old continued.
“There is no young player who has this class and also demonstrates it everyday worldwide.
“The same also applies for Robert Lewandowski. He is a striker in the top category, a player who is a decisive factor for success. With his skills, he is one of the best attackers in the world and is therefore understandably Bayern’s striker of choice. But he is also an object of desire for other great world clubs.”
Both Bayern and BVB will bid to book their place in the Champions League final at Wembley when they face Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively, in the second-leg of their semi-final ties on Tuesday and Wednesday.
