'Champions League can save Dortmund's season' – Weidenfeller

Jurgen Klopp’s side have failed to get the better of die Roten domestically this term but that will count for nothing if they win at Wembley on May 25

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller believes that victory over Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League would “save” their whole season.

After winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles, die Schwarzgelben came off a distant second-best to their Bavarian rivals this season, while their DFB-Pokal defence was also ended by Jupp Heynckes’ men.

However, Weidenfeller knows that a win over Bayern at Wembley on May 25 would change the entire complexion of their campaign.

“We can save the whole season with just this one game,” the shot-stopper told SID. “And we already have achieved a lot [by reaching the final], because nobody expected us to do it.

“So, whatever will come our way now, we will gladly take it.”

Dortmund captain Sebastian Kehl is also acutely aware of the importance of their upcoming London showdown with die Roten.

“We will take the match very seriously and, of course, we want to say goodbye to our fans appropriately,” the midfielder explained. “Therefore, victory is our goal.”

Dortmund and Bayern drew 1-1 in their most recent meeting at Signal Iduna Park earlier in May, though both sides fielded second-string sides.
