The former Germany international was approached by the club’s sporting director Matthias Sammer but has opted not to accept his offer
Stefan Effenberg has rejected an offer from Bayern Munich to take charge of the Bundesliga champions’ Under-23 side.
Sporting director Matthias Sammer was eager to bring the former Bayern midfielder back to the club in a coaching capacity, but after careful consideration he has opted not to accept the position.
“I am and always was in contact with Stefan. In our discussions, it came out that it is not his desire. He cannot imagine himself coaching a reserve team in the fourth division,” Sammer told Sport1.
Mehmet Scholl recently vacted the role as Under-23 boss to pursue a career as a TV pundit.
Effenberg was also linked with Schalke recently, but the club extended Jens Keller’s deal until 2015 this weekend.
The 44-year-old spent six seasons with Bayern across two different spells, winning the Bundesliga three times in a row as well as lifting the Champions League.
