The 41-year-old believes the Poland international is a key player for the Champions League finalists and understands their current position regarding the wantaway striker
Former Germany international Heiko Herrlich feels Borussia Dortmund’s refusal to sell Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window is logical.
Herrlich, who found himself in a similar situation as the Poland international when Borussia Monchengladbach did not allow him to join Dortmund in 1995, believes Lewandowski is one of the best strikers in the world and has stressed that a hefty transfer fee would not compensate the loss of a player with the 24-year-old’s qualities.
“I can understand Dortmund’s reasoning. Lewandowski cannot be replaced. BVB have already made a lot of money on the transfer of Mario Gotze, so they don’t need the funds that a transfer would generate,” Herrlich told TZ.
“They do need someone who scores goals, though. And Lewandowski is the perfect attacker, the best a team can have. There is not enough money in the world to compensate his loss.”
Herrlich then went on to advise Lewandowski to remain patient and focus on Dortmund for one more season before making the move to Bayern in 2014, when his contract expires.
“Dortmund will not change their mind all of a sudden and allow him to leave. That’s why he should pick himself up again and give his all for the team again. He cannot force Dortmund to let him go.
“The best thing he can do is tell himself that it’s just one more season. He can then join Bayern after all and achieve all his goals.”
Lewandowski claims that BVB have promised him that he would be allowed to leave this summer, but Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has denied such claims and has made it clear that the Champions League finalists have no intention of selling the striker to Bayern.
