The 29-year-old faces a nervous wait to discover whether or not he can participate in Friday’s game after spraining his ankle on Tuesday
Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger could miss Friday’s Uefa Super Cup clash with Chelsea through injury.
The Germany international limped off the field injured during the Bavarians’ 1-1 draw with Freiburg on Tuesday, prompting Bayern boss Pep Guardiola to confirm the 29-year-old faces a battle to be fit to face the Blues.
The 42-year-old told reporters: “He [Schweinsteiger] sprained his ankle. There will be a medical check tomorrow. I hope he will play on Friday, but we do not know that yet.”
Tuesday’s result brought Bayern’s 100% start to the Bundesliga season to an end, but Guardiola insisted he was happy with the performances of his side after the game.
He added: “We played well, very well. But if you’re only 1-0 up in the Bundesliga, things like this can always happen. We never stopped attacking and we had chances. But I’m very, very proud of my players.”
The former Barcelona boss opted to rest a number of key players for the visit to the Mage Solar Stadion ahead of Friday’s game, with Arjen Robben, Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribery and Mario Mandzukic all named on the bench.
