Gotze & Schweinsteiger return for Germany

Ilkay Gundogan, Lukas Podolski and Marcel Jansen all miss out through injury as Joachim Low calls up seven Bayern Munich players

Germany have been buoyed by the return of Mario Gotze and Bastian Schweinsteiger for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Faroe Islands.

The Bayern Munich duo have been joined in the 24-strong squad by club team-mate Toni Kroos, who is also back in the mix after recovering from his own injury issues.

Gotze returns after finally overcoming the troublesome groin injury he sustained last season while still at Borussia Dortmund, while the injury-plaged Schweinsteiger will make his first appearance for his country since March, against Kazkhstan, if he shakes off an ankle knock.

Elsewhere, Bayern Leverkusen winger Sidney Sam and Borussia Monchengladbach forward Max Kruse have both been included, but Ilkay Gundogan, Marcel Jansen and Lukas Podolksi all miss out through injury.

Germany boss Joachim Low is please with the strength of his squad but is refusing to underestimate the threat posed to his side’s hopes of all but sealing their place at next summer’s World Cup with back-to-back wins.

“We will now totally focus on the two games against Austria and the Faroes,” he is quoted as saying by the DFB’s official website.

“Although we are the leaders of our World Cup qualifying group, we are not yet qualified for the finals in Brazil.

“It is, therefore, our clear objective to take another step in that direction with two wins.

“I am very pleased that we can now return to work intensively with the team over a longer period of time.”

Germany currently sit top of Group C, five points clear of Austria, Sweden and Republic of Ireland.
