The former Borussia Dortmund star changed the game as a half-time substitute against Mainz on Saturday and his boss believes he will soon be at his very best level
Pep Guardiola has backed Mario Gotze to star for Bayern Munich after the attacker inspired the Bundesliga champions to a 4-1 win over Mainz.
Die Roten surprisingly fell behind to Shawn Parker’s first-half strike on Saturday, with Guardiola responding by bringing Gotze on for Rafinha at half-time.
The change proved to be successful, with the Germany starlet setting up Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic to add to two Thomas Muller efforts in a victory, and Guardiola has urged Bayern fans to be patient with the 21-year-old as he works to rediscover his top form.
“[Gotze] is an unbelievable player,” the former Barcelona coach was quoted as saying by Bild.
“He is intelligent and clever in the penalty area. He just needs more time. He’s on the right track.
“He just needs a few games to be at his best.”
Bayern are now undefeated in 34 league matches and lead the Bundesliga with 23 points from their nine games so far, one ahead of both Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.
