Bayern break Barcelona's record Champions League winning streak with CSKA victory

The Bavarians’ triumph in Russia was their 10th in a row in Europe’s premier club cup competition, thus surpassing the mark set by the Blaugrana during the 2002-03 tournament

Bayern Munich’s 3-1 defeat of CSKA Moscow at Arena Khimki on Wednesday evening saw them break Barcelona’s record of nine straight victories in the Champions League.

The Bavarians last failed to win a match in Europe’s top tournament in a dead rubber against Arsenal in the second leg of the last 16 in 2012-13, when they went down 2-0 at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern progressed on the night on the away goals rule, thanks to their 3-1 success at the Emirates, and then went on to claim resounding aggregate victories over both Juventus and Barcelona in the last eight and semi-finals, before Arjen Robben’s late winner saw them triumph against Borussia Dortmund in the final.

Despite changing coach over the summer, with Pep Guardiola taking over from Jupp Heynckes, Bayern have begun the current season in a similar vein, with the highlight of the their 2013-14 campaign so far coming at the Etihad Stadium, where they recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over the Premier League heavyweights.

A subsequent home-and-away success over Viktoria Plzen took their winning run to nine games, thus equalling the previous record set by Barcelona back in 2002-03.

The Blaugrana’s streak started with a 3-2 win over Club Brugge in matchday 1 and finished in February with a 0-0 draw against Inter in the second group stage.

Robben got the ball rolling for the Bavarians in Russia on Wednesday, driving home an early effort after an excellent team move.

Mario Gotze doubled their advantage with a magnificent solo goal and, though Keisuke Honda pulled one back with a penalty, a spot kick from Thomas Muller restored Guardiola’s side’s two-goal advantage.

Bayern are also in the midst of a record-breaking run in the Bundesliga, having gone 38 games without defeat.
