Goal readers name Ronaldo as the best player of the Champions League group stage

The Portuguese sensation amassed more than two thirds of the vote following his record-breaking run of form, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic a long way behind in second

Cristiano Ronaldo has been voted as the best player of the Champions League group stage by Goal readers.

The Real Madrid star scored a record-breaking nine goals in his five appearances as los Blancos soared through to the knockout phase, while he also notched two assists in a superb run of performances.

Ronaldo emerged the clear winner in our poll, which began at the end of matchday six on Wednesday, amassing a massive 62.31 per cent of your votes.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic finished in second, with a total 16.9 per cent of the voting, after the Paris Saint-Germain star netted eight strikes in Group C – including a stunning four goals in the rout of Anderlecht in October.

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey finished third in our poll with 7.6 per cent of the votes, after his winning goals against Olympique de Marseille and Borussia Dortmund helped the Gunners battle into the knockout phase at the expense of Napoli.

In fourth is Basel’s Mohamed Salah on 5.8 per cent, who scored two winning goals against Chelsea and caught the eye of many across the continent with a lively string of displays for the Swiss champions, who ultimately finished third after a controversial final-day defeat to Schalke.

Bayern Munich ace Arjen Robben placed fifth in our poll, with his three goals and two assists in four games prior to injury only enough to earn him 4.6 per cent of your votes, while a further 2.9 per cent of you felt another player deserved to be recognised as the best in the competition to date.
