Lahm: I see myself in midfield

The 30-year-old Bayern skipper says that he enjoys the more advanced role but will continue to respect the decision of his coaches for both club and country

Bayern Munich and Germany captain Philipp Lahm has declared his fondness of playing in midfield, stating that he now feels this is his primary position.

The versatile Bavarian player, who in past years deputised at full-back on a regular basis, has this season adopted a more advanced role under the guidance of head coach Pep Guardiola.

The move has been met by positive reaction as Bayern race towards the Bundesliga title with an unbeaten record that now stretches to 47 matches, and Lahm also feels it adds another dimension to his international prospects at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

“At the moment I see myself in the midfield,” he told Bild.

“The fact that I can play both positions is beyond question. When a player like me has played for months at a position, I believe that it is an option for the national coach.”

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash with Schalke, Lahm also spoke about Manuel Neuer as the shot-stopper prepares to face his former club.

He added: “Sure, he still keeps his fingers crossed [for Schalke to do well] when they do not play against us. But he is 100 per cent a Bayern player.”
