Beckenbauer: No Sammer no success

The Germany legend says the 46-year-old’s role cannot be underestimated, while offering his backing to club president Uli Hoeness amid his current tax scandal

Bayern Munich would not have enjoyed their recent success had sporting director Matthias Sammer not been at the club, according to Franz Beckenbauer.

Sammer was criticised by Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp on Friday, who questioned the significance of his role at the Allianz Arena, with the pair first clashing on the touchline last season.

However, the 46-year-old enjoyed a strong relationship in his role as sporting director with previous coach Jupp Heynckes and relations have been equally smooth with Pep Guardiola since his arrival last summer.

“I dare say, without Sammer Bayern would not have had this success,” the Germany legend told Sky. “Matthias came at the right time when people said Bayern were dead.

“With Heynckes a dream couple developed, the two brought Bayern back to life. Now it is the same with Guardiola. A better pair than Sammer and Guardiola does not exist.”

However, while Bayern have enjoyed a largely blemish-free season on the pitch, off it news that president Uli Hoeness has admitted to defrauding German tax authorities of €18 million has cast a shadow over the club.

The 62-year-old was originally charge with failing to declare a far smaller sum of money (€3.5m) in taxes, before he revealed the full extent of his misdemeanours.

Prosecutors are now seeking to impose a seven-year jail sentence and Beckenbauer offered his support to his former Germany team-mate and strongly believes the case is borne out of an innocent mistake.

I can only hope and keep my fingers crossed that it turns out well. I think he must be very well prepared to go into the ring.

“I do not think he will get himself into a similar situation again. In the future he will not be so sloppy with these things. I know that it was an accident, Uli is a slob with these things. I can only hope that the court shows their human side, because Uli is a wonderful person.”
