The Reds struck on three further occasions at Anfield on Sunday – only Real Madrid have scored more league goals in Europe’s major leagues this season
Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Manchester City on Sunday not only took them closer to a first English championship in 24 years, but also saw them move just one goal behind Real Madrid as Europe’s highest league scorers in 2013-14.
Brendan Rodgers’ men have now hit an impressive 93 goals in 34 Premier League games this season. Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge – both of whom failed to register versus City – are the two top scorers in the division with 49 between them.
Only Real Madrid, with 94 strikes in 33 La Liga matches, have found the back of the net more times in 2013-14 from Europe’s major leagues. Cristiano Ronaldo has supplied 28 of this total.
Barcelona are the third highest scorers with 92 goals from 33 games and had been the most prolific side going into this weekend, prior to their shock 1-0 loss to Granada.
Manchester City are fourth on the continent with 86 strikes in 32 encounters. The Citizens had been Europe’s best scorers during most of the first half of the campaign, but their potency has decreased in 2014.
European champions Bayern Munich are fifth with 82 goals in 30 games. The Bavarians have also slowed down since clinching the Bundesliga in record time and have failed to score in their last two matches.
French giants Paris Saint-Germain are Europe’s sixth highest scorers, having struck 74 times in 32 games. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani have contributed to 40 of these.
La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid have built their success this season on a mean backline, but have still scored 70 league goals.
Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord, helped by Graziano Pelle, also have 70 goals to their name – although it probably won’t be enough to prevent Ajax from winning a fourth successive Dutch title.
The top 10 is completed by Italy’s best two teams this season – Juventus and Roma. The Bianconeri, who are five points clear at the top of Serie A with a game in hand, have scored 69 goals to the capital outfit’s 68.
