Bayern Munich legend Steffen Effenberg has urged Toni Kroos to turn down a move to Manchester United and remain at Allianz Arena.

Kroos has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford as contract talks at Bayern continue to stall, with Goal revealing that United planned to open discussions over a £40 million deal for the Germany international on April 9.

The 24-year-old’s current deal with the Bundesliga champions expires in June 2015 and Effenberg has warned the playmaker to think carefully over whether he really wants to leave the German giants.

The Sky pundit told Goal: “Put it this way: If you have the opportunity to form a successful era at Bayern, you should think two or three times about what step to make.

“Every player feels enormously well in Munich and at the end of the season, there are titles. Kroos is a key figure, a transfer shouldn’t be an issue.

“He is an important and crucial player – for the system and the new philosophy.”

Mario Mandzukic’s future has been a subject of debate recently although, with Arsenal having been linked, Effenberg remains confident that the striker will be stay and fight for his place despite the impending arrival of Robert Lewandowski.

“We don’t know where [Mandzukic] is heading,” the former Germany international added. “He said publicly that he has no worries, is not afraid of competition.

“He will accept the challenge. They always say ‘Bayern have a huge squad but are only allowed to play with eleven players’. Then injuries come and the whole discussion is finished. A lot of things adjust themselves.”
