Robben: Bayern have had a superb season

The Dutchman was thrilled to score the opening goal in the DFB-Pokal final – a match which team-mate Toni Kroos believes proves his side remains Germany’s best

Arjen Robben insists Bayern Munich have had a “superb” season after they clinched the domestic double with a DFB-Pokal final triumph on Saturday.

Two goals in extra-time from Robben and Thomas Muller sealed back-to-back Pokal wins for the Bavarians as they beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in Berlin.

Head coach Pep Guardiola came in for criticism following their 5-0 aggregate thashing at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals, but Robben maintains a campaign in which his side have clinched four trophies – including the Uefa and German Super Cups – can only be considered a strong one.

He told Sky: “Those games are the best. You have to enjoy them and you have to be ready. I didn’t have the ball as often as usual, but I waited. I knew my chance would come.”

He then added to ARD: “It is a superb season. Having won the cup, the Bundesliga, breaking many records and getting in to the Champions League semi-final, it’s not that bad.”

Javi Martinez added that Bayern deserve credit for continuing to set new standards in German football, while Toni Kroos felt the final win was convincing proof that Guardiola’s side remains the best in the country.

“Two [German] trophies in one year – that is something wonderful,” said Martinez. “We are still making history. We didn’t want to give them space for counterattacks and we did that.”

“Those are the two best German teams,” added Kroos. “For us, it was all about winning the cup. And that’s what we did and really deserved it. Today everyone saw which team is better.”

Dortmund felt aggrieved that Mats Hummels’ effort was deemed not to have crossed the line in the second half, even though replays confirmed a goal should have been given, but Bayern defender Dante insists the referee’s decision did not win his side the game.

“We didn’t win because of a wrong referee decision but because we were better,” he added.
