Christian Heidel is convinced the Bundesliga title will be fought by last season’s top two clubs but suggested Jurgen Klopp’s men look like a stronger team at the moment
Borussia Dortmund are now a stronger team than Bayern Munich, according to Mainz general manager Christian Heidel.
Bayern romped to Bundesliga success in record-breaking fashion last season under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola and also defeated Jurgen Klopp’s men in the DFB-Pokal final.
However, Dortmund beat the Bavarians in the DFL-Supercup last month and looked very impressive in their midweek win over Arsenal in the Champions League.
Their early 2014-15 form and summer signings have led Heidel – whose Mainz side host Dortmund on Saturday – to believe the Signal Iduna Park club have the edge over the reigning league champions.
“Dortmund and Bayern have the title for themselves this season”, Heidel, who is friends with former Mainz coach Klopp, told Bild.
“After the Champions League performance they put in this week, I think Dortmund are actually one step further ahead than Bayern. They always buy top players. Their squad is really strong.
“However, we want to annoy Dortmund for as long as possible. We’ll try everything to win.”
Dortmund’s visit to Mainz kicks off at 18:30CET.
