The Germany legend has insisted that the attacking midfielder is not the right man to replace the Frenchman due to his different playing style
Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer has stressed that Mario Gotze cannot be compared to Franck Ribery as they are different types of players.
The former Borussia Dortmund star has been moved by Pep Guardiola from the centre to the left wing a number of times during Ribery’s absence due to injury.
However, Beckenbauer does not see Gotze as the ideal replacement for the Frenchman.
“You simply cannot copy someone like Ribery,” Beckenbauer told TZ when asked whether Gotze could displace the injury-prone Ribery.
“Ribery and Gotze are completely different types of players. Ribery tries to open up defences down the wing and always looks for the one-on-one.
“Gotze perhaps fits Pep Guardiola’s philosophy a bit more. He’s always looking for the combination, gets his team-mates involved and passes the ball quickly. I’m glad we have both options.
“Mario is an amazing talent, but he didn’t really show what he can do yet last season. He has to up his game and become more consistent.”
The 22-year-old has netted twice in seven appearances in all competitions for Bayern so far this season.
