The attacker will be out of action for the rest of the year, but the ex-Bayern midfielder feels that’s not necessarily a bad thing for BVB
Former Germany star Stefan Effenberg believes Marco Reus’ injury problems could prove to be a blessing in disguise for Borussia Dortmund as it could scare off potential suitors.
Reus has been heavily linked with a move away from Dortmund at the end of the 2014-15 campaign, with Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid among the clubs keeping an eye on the attacker’s situation.
The 25-year-old suffered an ankle injury in his side’s 2-2 draw with Paderborn at the weekend that will keep him out for the remainder of 2014, yet Effenberg feels there’s a positive to the Germany forward’s latest physical misfortune, too.
“Maybe his injury problems could prove to be an advantage for Dortmund,” Effenberg told Sky90.
“Who knows, Reus could now stay at Dortmund for two or three more years.”
The former Borussia Monchengladbach attacker has a contract with BVB until June 2017, but has a clause in his existing deal that allows him to leave the club at the end of the season for €25 million.
Reus missed the 2014 World Cup due to injury and has already missed several games this season as well due to recurring ankle problems.
