The former Portugal winger has tipped his compatriot to retain his title as the world’s best player, but Fabio Cannavaro believes Manuel Neuer should land the gong
Luis Figo believes Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will pip Barcelona ace Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich ‘sweeper-keeper’ Manuel Neuer to the 2014 Fifa Ballon d’Or.
Ronaldo has hit a staggering 55 goals in 55 games this year, inspiring his side to Copa del Rey and Champions League titles.
And 2001 Ballon d’Or winner Figo says there can only be one outcome when the award is presented on January 12.
“Ball’on D’or? It’s going to be Ronaldo,” Figo told reporters at a celebrity match in Thailand.
Meanwhile, former Italy international and winner of the prize in 2006, Fabio Cannavaro, believes Neuer will become the first goalkeeper to claim the prize in half a century, praising the 28-year-old’s ability to rush from his line.
“For Ball’on D’or, I believe Neuer is the favourite,” said the former Italy international.
“He performed great in World Cup, and not only does his job well but also defines new rules and new expectations in the position of goalkeeper.
