Guardiola: Victory good for our heads

The Spaniard is happy with how his team fought to claim a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg in their first Bundesliga game of the new season

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola believes that his side’s 2-1 Bundesliga victory over Wolfsburg will improve the mentality within the squad.

The German champions were made to work hard to win the opening league game of the new season, with Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller netting either side of half-time.

The Spaniard accepts that Wolfsburg were more than a match for his players after the break but says that the result was all that mattered.

“For every coach in the world, victory is the most important thing,” he is quoted as saying by the club’s official website.

“In general, I am very, very satisfied. We fought well. In the second half, Wolfsburg were better, but we shouldn’t forget that we played one of the best teams in the league.

“Victory was important for our heads.”

Holger Badstuber made his first Bundesliga appearance in almost two years and described the experience as a “perfect day”.

“Of course it was emotional for me to be able to play after such a long time in front of the home crowd. The beautiful thing is that we got victory here.

“For me, it was a perfect day.”
