The Germany boss and Matthias Sammer both feel that the Bayern Munich shot-stopper deserves the trophy more than Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi
Germany coach Joachim Low has acknowledged that it would be a huge disappointment if Manuel Neuer doesn’t win the Fifa Ballon d’Or.
The Bayern Munich goalkeeper faces stiff competition from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the prestigious individual award, but Low feels that Neuer deserves it most following his superb performances in 2014.
“Everything other than Neuer winning the Ballon d’Or would be very disappointing,” Low was quoted as saying by Bild.
“Manuel has given the goalkeeping game an entirely new dimension in the past few years. He’s been a goalkeeper like no-one else.
“He is an incredible personality, both on and off the pitch. He showed the world his extraordinary quality during the World Cup.”
Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer, meanwhile, feels that the 28-year-old is unlikely to ever win the trophy if he doesn’t emerge victorious this time around.
“If he doesn’t win it this time, after the World Cup he has played and after becoming world champion, then I don’t know when he will win it,” Sammer said.
“The question is whether a goalkeeper is part of the team or not. If he’s part of it, then there’s only one player who deserves to win the Ballon d’Or and that’s Manuel.”
The winner will be announced at the annual Fifa Ballon d’Or gala in Zurich on January 12.
