We'll go through despite first-leg struggle – Guardiola

The coach of the German champions believes his side will still progress despite failing to capitalise on their dominance against Shakhtar on Tuesday

Pep Guardiola has backed his Bayern Munich side to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals despite having been held to a 0-0 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

The 2013 winners lost Xabi Alonso to a second-half red card but still dominated for long periods only to see the Ukrainians hold out for a share of the spoils.

Yet coach Guardiola was happy enough with the result, despite his side failing to convert possession into meaningful chances for a precious away goal.

“We played for a long time against an extra man, which made it difficult for us,” Guardiola told Sky after the match at the Arena Lviv.

“We controlled the match but created few real chances.

“It is always better to score an away goal because now we have to win the second leg, but I believe we will do that.”

The return fixture will take place at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, March 11.
