Guardiola: No rift with club doctor

The Bayern Munich doctor quit the club after almost 40 years of service this week, stating his staff were blamed for the recent defeat to Porto

Pep Guardiola has insisted he had nothing to do with Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt’s decision to quit Bayern Munich, but refused to elaborate on his surprise exit.

The doctor ended almost 40 years of service when he announced the departure of him and his staff, stating that they were blamed for the Champions League defeat to Porto for unknown reasons.

Reports in Germany have said his resignation came as a result of an argument with chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, however there have been rumours of a rift between the medical staff and Guardiola.

The coach sent Thiago Alcantara to Spain to see a specialist instead of allowing Muller-Wohlfahrt to deal with his injury, but Guardiola insists he had no influence on the doctor’s decision to leave and that there was no problem between them.

“Nothing happened between us. It was his decision,” the Spaniard told reporters. “I have great respect for him. I can only respect the decision. That is all.”

Guardiola was seen clapping sarcastically towards the bench during Bayern’s DFB-Pokal meeting with Bayer Leverkusen, but he insists that gesture was not directed towards Muller-Wohlfahrt or any of his staff.

“It was my disappointment. Nothing to do with the doctor.”

The Bavarian side also released a statement, thanking Muller-Wohlfahrt for the work he and his staff have done over the years.

“Bayern Munich regret Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller Wohlfahrt’s decision to leave his role as club doctor. Especially Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt, but also his team, did first-class work for the club and its players. We are particularly grateful for this.

“Bayern will soon announce a successor for the medical department. Till then Dr. Volker Braun, specialist for orthopaedics and sports physician, will accompany the team of FC Bayern to their matches.”
