Jurgen Klopp believes it was “meant to be” when Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern Munich to reach the DFB-Pokal final.

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the first half to give the hosts the lead, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled with 15 minutes remaining to take the game into extra-time.

Dortmund went on to win the game 2-0 penalties, with Pep Guardiola’s men missing their first three spot-kicks and Manuel Neuer seeing his effort come back off the crossbar.

Ilkay Gundogan and Sebastian Kehl slotted home their penalties meaning BVB will face either Arminia Bielefeld or Wolfsburg in the final, who meet in Wednesday’s last four tie.

“That was a hell of a game,” he told Sky. “Both teams gave everything. Bayern was surely better in the first half, but we really deserved the equaliser in the second half.

“Today it was meant to be. Now we went through and that’s it.”
