Guardiola is the right man for Bayern, insists Ballack

The former Germany star says the 44-year-old’s coaching skills are beyond question and has hit out at some of the team’s critics this season

Pep Guardiola unquestionably remains the right man for Bayern Munich, according to former midfielder Michael Ballack.

With his contract at the Allianz Arena set to expire next season, Guardiola’s future remains the subject of speculation despite his insistence he will stay at the club for at least another season.

Bayern’s defeats in the semi-finals of the Champions League and DFB-Pokal have increased the scrutiny on the former Barcelona boss’ tenure, with Manchester City heavily linked as potential suitors.

Ballack, however, is adamant that Guardiola is the best man for the job in Munich, telling SID: “Pep’s footballing expertise is indisputable. He is a top coach and, in my opinion, the right person for Bayern.”

Former Germany international Ballack, who spent four years with Bayern, says criticism of the team this season has been unfair and has called for some perspective on their achievements.

“I know that from my time when we were ‘only’ Bundesliga champions,” he said when asked if some fans were complaining too much.

“They played excellent football for long stretches of the season. As the championship was over, it was clear they lost some drive. But that’s always the danger with top teams like them.

“At the moment there is a lot of complaining. Everybody should get some perspective, especially as they were eliminated from the Champions League by very good opponents, probably the favourites. Bayern’s foundation for the next few years is magnificent.”
