Thomas Tuchel’s men impressed with a comfortable win over Monchengladbach at the weekend and they are optimistic about their chances this term
Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has stressed that BVB were always among the title candidates for 2015-16 and that people were wrong to write them off.
The Signal Iduna Park side endured a difficult 2014-15 campaign in which they were battling against relegation in the first half of the season before eventually finishing seventh in the table.
And with successful coach Jurgen Klopp leaving BVB, many questioned their ability to challenge teams such as Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach and Schalke.
Dortmund impressed on matchday one, though, as they hammered Gladbach 4-0 and Watzke is confident they can return to the Champions League, even if he feels Bayern remain the team to beat.
“Bayern are and remain the main favourites to win the Bundesliga title,” Watzke told Bild .
“As for the Champions League places, people who wrote off Borussia Dortmund made a mistake. We were always there.
“Even if nobody really could have imagined we would put in such a performance against Gladbach.
“But we have two important games coming up now. The mood was jubilant after last season’s win over Schalke as well, but we then fell deep again after that.”
Dortmund meet Odd on Thursday in the Europa League, before returning to Bundesliga action against Ingolstadt on Sunday.
