Gotze better at Bayern than at Dortmund, says Sammer

The attacker’s form has been slated in recent months, but the Bundesliga champions remain confident he will come good

Matthias Sammer believes that the under-fire Mario Gotze has been playing at a higher level for Bayern Munich than former club Borussia Dortmund.

The 22-year-old left BVB for the Bavarians in the summer of 2013, but has thus far failed to justify his €37 million transfer fee.

Nevertheless, Sammer is satisfied with Gotze’s performances for Bayern and feels that the World Cup hero has made plenty of progress since arriving at the Allianz Arena.

“Mario has been working very, very hard this season and will take the next step next season. He has been better at Bayern than he was at Dortmund,” Sammer told Sportstudio.

“Things are different at Bayern. The conditions at Dortmund were nothing like here. Things are different at Bayern.

“But when you make it at Bayern, you will become a true great. And I just know he will make it at Bayern.”

Former Bayern star Lothar Matthaus, meanwhile, has urged head coach Pep Guardiola to take more of an interest in the Germany international’s development.

“Mario is a player who needs a bit of help,” the World Cup winner stated. “Guardiola should show more of an interest in him.

“He needs to feel right at home in order to get the best out of himself.”
