Martinez thrilled with goalscoring return against Bayern

The Porto captain was pleased to hit the target on his return from injury but has warned that Bayern Munich will not lie down in the second leg

Jackson Martinez says he was delighted to find the net in Porto’s 3-1 Champions League win over Bayern Munich on his return from a one-month lay-off.

The Portuguese side shocked the Germans with an early double from Ricardo Quaresma, with Martinez adding a third after Thiago Alcantara had pulled one back.

And the striker admits it was especially pleasing to score on his return after a troublesome thigh injury.

“These were a couple of difficult weeks for me, as I did not know if I would be able to play,” Martinez told reporters after the game. “It is never easy when we return after an injury, but I prepared myself for this moment and everything went great.

“I’m still not 100 per cent fit but with the help of my team-mates I was able to take my chance.”

The Colombian skipper went on to praise his side for their efforts, but warned that the job is far from complete.

“We knew Bayern would be fantastic with the ball and that they would have more possession than us, so we had to pressure them high up the field and not concede space in the middle,” he added.

“From there we were able to make the most of the chances we created.

“This win fill us with joy, but we know that it does not define who will go through to the next round.

“We still have to play another match, and that will be much harder than this one.”

The second leg at the Allianz Arena will be played on Tuesday, April 21.
