Neuer: Bayern never doubt themselves

The Germany international is brimming with confidence ahead of Wednesday’s return and has little doubt the Bavarians will emerge victorious

Manuel Neuer is confident Bayern Munich will reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League at the expense of Shakhtar Donetsk, even if something unexpected were to happen in the second leg of the round-of-16 tie.

The two sides played out a scoreless draw in the first leg and conceding an early goal in the reverse fixture on Wednesday would leave the Bundesliga champions with a tough task to turn things around.

Nevertheless, Neuer has stressed that Bayern never doubt themselves and feels they have shown in the past that they are not a team to panic easily.

“You can see we retain our composure regardless of what happens,” Neuer was quoted as saying on the official Bayern website.

“We don’t start doubting ourselves even if something goes wrong.

“We know we have to be cautious and keep their counter-attacks under control.

“We basically go into every game looking to win, and this is a game we have to win. We like these situations.”

Bayern will be without Xabi Alonso due to suspension at the Allianz Arena, while Thiago Alcantara and Javi Martinez remain unavailable due to injury. Philipp Lahm recently resumed regular training action, but is unlikely to make the match squad for the game versus Shakhtar just yet.
