Porto played with their hearts in their boots – Casemiro

The midfielder has hailed his side’s will and determination after the shock victory over Bayern Munich

Porto’s surprise 3-1 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Bayern Munich came courtesy of a display from the heart, midfielder Casemiro has claimed.

The Portuguese outfit took an early two-goal lead thanks to a pair of goals from Ricardo Quaresma, with Jackson Martinez adding a third after Thiago Alcantara had pulled one back for Bayern.

And a delighted Casemiro, who is on loan at the Estadio do Dragao from Real Madrid, said afterwards that it was the passion with which Porto played that made the difference on the night.

“Our hearts were on the tip of our boots, that was the secret,” he told reporters. “The whole team must be congratulated from playing with heart, dertermination and will.”

The return leg will take place on Tuesday at the Allianz Arena, but Casemiro insists they must approach it with the same humility they played with on Wednesday.

“We have built a good advantage but we must now think of playing Academica on Saturday with great humility. Then we must remember that this is the Champions League and we are still to negotiate the biggest hurdle, which is playing in Munich.

“We go on from here with our feet on the ground, thinking game-by-game, because we have done nothing so far.”
