Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeneß has admitted that the club don’t have the kind of money which could see them pull off a Neymar or Kylian Mbappe-type transfer.
The 65-year-old was fairly transparent at a fanclub meeting with Schießamer Red-White Dynamite, but did make assurances that the Bavarians would be able to sanction deals of around €60m.
As quoted by ?Goal, he said: “We are unable to make insane transfers like Neymar or Mbappe. If necessary, there will sometimes be a transfer over 50, 60 or 70 million euros at Bayern.”
It would appear that money is not too prominent in the Bundesliga, with Bayern the richest club of the lot, and currently their record signing is midfielder Corentin Tolisso, who joined last summer for a relatively paltry €41.2m.
Previously, the Bavarians’ record signing was Javi Martinez at €40m, and Mats Hummels, Mario Gotze and Arturo Vidal were all in and around the €38m mark.
Bayern have been able to assemble a fantastic team for relatively low sums in the grand scheme of things, but it looks like they won’t be able to compete with European heavyweights for the game’s top stars and prospects.
The club haven’t really needed a £198m Neymar or an Mbappe (who will cost Paris Saint-Germain €155m next summer) so far this season though, with the club sitting pretty at the top of the Bundesliga after Jupp Heynckes steadied the ship following Carlo Ancelotti’s choppy start.
