Germany Midfielder Leon Goretzka Explains Determining Factors Behind Impending Bayern Munich Move

Schalke star midfielder Leon Goretzka will be playing for a new club next season, having  agreed to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on a free transfer in the summer.

The 23-year-old, who started his youth career at Werner SV 06 Bochum, left many Schalke fans disappointed with his decision, but has revealed the factors that played a part in turning his head.

Goretzka had previously written an open letter to the supporters with the aim of helping them understand why he chose to leave the club. And he has since sat down with funke mediengruppe to further explain, citing the need to get out of his comfort zone, as well as the lure of Champions League football, as motivators.

?“I have come to the conclusion that [joining Bayern] is the right step,” the attacker said (H/T Sportbild).

“I felt like I had to get out of my comfort zone to develop. The Champions League also played a big role in the decision.

“At Bayern you start with a different expectation in the Champions League. With Schalke, the focus was always on getting through the group stage. I want to take this step and I think Bayern is the place for me to do that.”

Goretzka has been recognised as one of the most exciting young talents in Europe as of late and Bayern have gotten themselves a huge bargain as they won’t be paying a transfer fee.

Competing for places with his future teammates, though, won’t be an easy task, and it will be interesting to see how this move works out for both the player and the club.

Dortmund Boss Admits Marco Reus Likely to Miss Bayern Clash Over Muscle Problem

?Marco Reus has been rated as a major doubt for Borussia Dortmund’s match against Bayern Munich at the end of the month.

Dortmund boss Peter Stoger was quoted by ?ESPN, admitting that the forward would likely miss the game against the Bundesliga leaders on 31st March due to muscle stiffness.

Reus only returned from a lengthy cruciate knee ligament injury in February, and has been missing for the past couple of weeks after he encountered problems with muscles around the area in the Europa League defeat to Red Bull Salzburg.

Borussia Dortmund v FC Red Bull Salzburg - UEFA Europa League Round of 16: First Leg

The 28-year-old sat out the win over Hannover last weekend because of the ongoing situation and, asked if he’d be available to face Jupp Heynckes’ runaway leaders in just over a week’s time, Stoger was adamant that that wouldn’t be the case.

He said: “I wouldn’t bet on it. It was always clear that there’d be difficulties. Within a short period of time, he helped us a lot.”

Reus has been plagued by numerous injury issues over the past few seasons as he struggles to get a grip on his fitness and help Dortmund become title contenders once more.

The 28-year-old has missed a mammoth 59 games over the past two seasons due to knee, thigh, heel and groin problems and the winger has been a huge miss to Die Borussen as they struggle to try and move up Germany’s top flight.

Dortmund find themselves sitting in third position only one point behind second-placed Schalke, but they are a massive 18 points off Bayern who have all but wrapped up the league trophy at this early stage of the campaign.

Reus has bagged 92 goals in 198 appearances in all competitions for the Westfalenstadion-based club, and his end product has been sorely missed by Stoger’s men as they try to become a dominant force in Germany and on the continent once more.

Brazil Boss Tite Does Not Expect Douglas Costa to Emulate ‘Irreplaceable’ Neymar Ahead of Friendlies

?Brazil head coach Tite says he does not expect Douglas Costa to serve as Neymar’s replacement ahead of the Selecao’s international friendlies against Russia and Germany.

Neymar will miss out for Brazil as he continues to recover from a foot injury. The Paris Saint-Germain star is ‘irreplaceable’ to Brazil according to Tite, but the 56-year-old expects his team to cope in his absence.

?Neymar underwent surgery back in February after breaking his metatarsal in a match against Marseille. He is expected to return to action in the weeks prior to the start of the World Cup this summer, but will miss out for this latest round of friendlies.

Juventus’ Douglas Costa has been called up to cover for Neymar, but is under no pressure to emulate his injured teammate.

“Neymar is irreplaceable,” explained Tite (via ?ESPN). “For the high level and quality he has, among the top three [players]. Douglas Costa will not replace Neymar, he will be Douglas Costa.”

Brazil will play the World Cup hosts Russia on Friday 23 March, followed by a tough match against the reigning champions Germany on Tuesday. The Selecao had a strong qualification campaign where they finished top of the South America table.

Brazil will be one of the contenders to lift the trophy in the summer, but they will have to prepare for the competition without their talismanic winger.

Tite insists Brazil can’t become too reliant on Neymar, and has called for team unity and strength as a key ingredient to success: “We have to assume the responsibility of being strong as a team. I can’t put it on the back of the main player, of the most famous, to solve things.”

Joachim Low Upbeat Over Manuel Neuer’s World Cup Chances As He Gives Update on Keeper’s Fitness

Germany head coach Joachim Low says he’s pretty confident Manuel Neuer will be part of his squad for the World Cup.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper has been out injured since September after suffering a hairline fracture in his foot, but Low has been keeping track of his progress and says Neuer will play for Bayern before the end of the season and is very likely to head to Russia this summer.

If a player isn’t involved in any of the pre-tournament games, it’s hard to name him in the final squad. When Manuel was here on Tuesday, we sat down and talked with Andy Köpke and Dr. Müller-Wohlfarth for a while – Manuel is right on track,” the World-Cup winning boss said via

“He’s set to play for Bayern again this season and the doctor has assured me that his scar is fine and his bones are growing back together as planned.

“At the moment he’s not able to train properly – he’s at around 90 percent and plans to be back to 100 by the end of the week so that he can start participating fully.

“Then he’ll be able to use a few training sessions to make sure he’s ready to play again. I am very confident Manuel Neuer will be in our World Cup squad.”

Neuer, meanwhile, insists Die Mannschaft will need him for the upcoming tournament, which he helped win four years ago in Brazil.

“I think Germany need me and I like being part of the Germany team too,” he said earlier this month. “Anybody would like to be involved in a World Cup. I still have aims with Bayern in the second half of the season, and then, of course, the main objective of [playing with] the national team in the summer.”

Bayern Munich Set to Hijack Borussia Dortmund’s Bid to Sign German International Jonas Hector

?Bayern Munich are set to hijack ?Borussia Dortmund’s bid to sign German defender Jonas Hector, according to reports.

Dortmund have been heavily linked with the defender in recent weeks with reports of an €8m release clause set to be met, however there appears to be a twist in the transfer saga.

1. FC Koeln v Hannover 96 - Bundesliga

According to German news outlet ?Kicker, it now appears that Bayern Munich have also contacted the 27-year-old about a potential move to the Allianz Arena.

The left back has made 111 Bundesliga appearances for Cologne since their promotion in 2014, and has since become a regular member of Joachim Löw‘s German national side. In fact, since Germany’s World Cup triumph in 2014, no German player has made more international appearances than Hector (25).

Should the deal go through, it would look more than likely that Hector would act as a back up to Bayern’s current left back David Alaba in case of an injury, suspension or need for rotation. This has led many people to believe that a move to Dortmund would suit the player better, with a higher chance for more playing time.

Germany v Norway - FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier

It is yet to have been revealed Hector’s preference on where he wants to play his football next season, although the bright lights of Bayern Munich would be hard for anyone to turn down at this moment in time.

They find themselves 17 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga as well as being drawn against Sevilla in the quarter finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League.

As for Dortmund, they have been left to trail in Bayern’s wake after falling an astounding 18 points behind the league leaders and were dumped out of the Europa League at the round of 16 stage. They’ll be looking to rebuild this summer, and will be hoping they can convince players of the calibre of Hector to chose them over their fierce rivals.
