The 10 Best Full-Back Partnerships in the World – Ranked

?The role of the full-back is so complex and developed in the current climate.

Not only are they expected to protect the flanks and create a fifth attacking outlet as part of the modern-day tactical trend of having five attackers occupying five vertical zones in the final third, but the influence of Pep Guardiola has seen the emergence of the ‘inverted full-back’ become more prominent in European football.

FBL-EUR-C1-REALMADRID-BAYERN

David Alaba and Kyle Walker have, in particular, been subject to this role under Guardiola, serving the purpose of helping a side be more effective in defensive transition, assisting the build-up phase and opening up wide areas.

In summary, full-backs are more important than ever.

So, here at 90min, we’ve already ranked the top 25 best full-backs in world football, now it’s time to take a look at how some of the best partnerships.

Strap yourselves in people, this could get controversial, but here are the current top ten full-back tandems in football…

10. Juan Cuadrado & Alex Sandro

FBL-EUR-C1-ATLETICO-JUVENTUS

Following the departure of Joao Cancelo to Manchester City in the summer, it was reported back in August that Maurizio Sarri was keen to deploy winger Juan Cuadrado at right-back for the upcoming campaign.

And that’s exactly what he did, with the Colombian regularly appearing on the opposite flank to Alex Sando; who despite struggling to rediscover his 2016 best under his new manager, proved a reliable option at both ends of the pitch.

Nevertheless, with Juve often failing to penetrate in central areas, Cuadrado was somewhat of an x-factor in the first half of the campaign; providing Juve with a different dynamic in attack amid their narrow 4-3-1-2 formation.

9. Jesus Navas & Sergio Reguilon

Sergio Reguilon, Jesus Navas

Jesus Navas has been a consistent performer in a right-back role since his return from Man City in 2017 and this season, he’s formed a formidable partnership with Real Madrid loanee Sergio Reguilon.

And while Navas has enjoyed another steady campaign – four La Liga assists and 1.4 combined tackles and interceptions per 90 – Reguilon has been nothing short of superb.

The rapid Spaniard loves to overlap and affect play in the final third, while his tremendous engine means he can keep marauding down that left flank for the full 90 minutes. Reguilon’s five goal contributions this term show his knack of producing in the attacking third, while his 3.3 tackles and interceptions highlight his ability to anticipate play.

It’s the form of Reguilon and the balance established between the two full-backs which elevate the Sevilla pair into the top ten.

8. Angelino & Nordi Mukiele

UEFA Champions League"Red Bull Leipzig v Tottenham Hotspur FC"

A combination of rotten injury luck and Julian Nagelsmann’s tactical flexibility get this Leipzig duo onto this list.

In Die Roten Bullen’s first game of the Bundesliga campaign, Lukas Klostermann and Marcel Halstenberg were used as two wing-backs before injuries to Ibrahima Konate and Willi Orban saw the aforementioned pair forced to flank Dayot Upamecano at centre-half before football ground to a halt.

This allowed January signing Angelino and Nordi Mukiele free reign at wing-back in the weeks leading up to the suspension; with the former thriving in an attack-minded role while the versatile Mukiele showed himself to be an absolute demon in all phases of play.

A combination to watch out for.

7. Stefan Lainer & Ramy Bensebaini

Stefan Lainer,Marco Rose

Marco Rose’s impact at Borussia Park has been profound, with the exciting German coach ensuring Stefan Lainer and Ramy Bensebaini both enjoyed successful debut campaigns at the club up to this point.

The technical proficiency of the pair allowed Gladbach to combine effectively down the flanks this season, while Lainer and Bensebaini have been key in stretching the pitch to create better crossing situations in the final third. Gladbach’s two full-backs themselves have combined for eight Bundesliga goal contributions this term.

From a defensive standpoint, they both possess impressive recovery speed which means they’re rarely caught out in defensive transition, while they also have the aggression and awareness to contribute to Rose’s high press and fierce counter-press.

Overall, Lainer and Bensebaini’s skillsets fit Rose’s system like a pair of gloves and it’s shown this season.

6. Hans Hateboer & Robin Gosens

FBL-EUR-C1-SHAKHTAR-ATALANTA

The tactical nuances in Gian Piero Gasperini’s free-flowing Atalanta side are endless, but it’s pretty obvious wing-backs Hans Hateboer and Robin Gosens play imperative roles.

Gasperini’s ‘positional play’ system is all about creating overloads all over the pitch and unbalancing opposition defences with constant rotations. The intelligence and ultra-aggressive nature of these two wing-backs have helped bring Gasperini’s ideas to life this term.

While Hateboer has just three assists to his name this season, Gosens has been a major beneficiary of Gasperini’s magic; with the German scoring seven times and assisting a further five. His impact on this Atalanta side can be liked to Marcos Alonso at Antonio Conte’s Chelsea back in 2016/17.

The pair aren’t called into defensive action all that often but when they are, they’ve proven to be stout defenders as well. The duo average 3.35 tackles and 1.9 interceptions per 90 in Serie A and the Champions League this season.

5. Ricardo Pereira & Ben Chilwell

Ricardo Pereira,Ben Chilwell

While there are holes to be picked in Ben Chilwell’s game, there’s no doubting this duo work brilliantly in tandem; with Ricardo Pereira establishing himself as one of Europe’s most complete right-backs.

The two play a key role in Brendan Rodgers’ 4-1-4-1 at the King Power, positioning themselves high and wide to facilitate overloads on the flanks and allowing wingers to tuck inside to combine with the likes of Jamie Vardy and James Maddison.

While Chilwell has proved to be a technically sound customer and a reliable enough defender, Pereira shone down the right flank before his injury; registering team-highs in dribbles completed (2.1) and tackles (4.3) per 90 this season.

The aggressive positioning of the duo can often lead to defensive vulnerability, but they both possess the necessary recovery speed to make up for it and overall, they’ve been more than capable of fulfilling their multitude of responsibilities at full-back under Rodgers.

4. Dani Carvajal & Ferland Mendy

Ferland Mendy

Despite sharing the load with Marcelo this season, we’ve included Ferland Mendy on this because he’s ultimately Los Blancos’ long-term number one left-back.

And despite the Real faithful not yet seeing the full capabilities of the mightily talented Frenchman, there’s little doubting he’s one of the most exciting full-back talents on the block and he’s shown signs of forming a stout partnership with long-time right-back Dani Carvajal.

The Spaniard has certainly struggled at times this season – see the Champions League encounter against City – but has also stood out on occasions as well – most notably in the most recent Clasico.

Carvajal’s five goal contributions, 3.6 combined tackles and interceptions in La Liga are nonetheless respectable and in the coming years, you can expect this duo to form a deadly partnership in Zinedine Zidane’s side.

3. Achraf Hakimi & Raphael Guerreiro

Achraf Hakimi,Raphael Guerreiro

Lucien Favre’s switch to a 3-4-3 at the start of December ultimately saved his job and turned Dortmund into title contenders, with wing-backs Achraf Hakimi and Raphael Guerreiro playing such a pivotal role in the dynamic system.

The pair complement each other wonderfully well in that they both bring something a little bit different to the BVB flanks. Hakimi, for example, is someone excels in combination play and exploits space smartly, while Guerreiro thrives in tight spaces.

Their tremendous engines, meanwhile, also allow BVB to defend effectively in a 5-4-1; something which went a long way in solving their defensive woes before the break.

Overall, they’ve combined for 20 Bundesliga goal contributions this term and are without a doubt the most exciting and dynamic full/wing-back tandem in the world.

2. Alphonso Davies & Benjamin Pavard

Alphonso Davies,Benjamin Pavard

The use of asymmetrical full-backs has been deployed brilliantly by Hansi Flick since his November arrival.

Niko Kovac’s former assistant has given licence to the phenomenal Alphonso Davies to roam free so Bayern can overload the left flank, while the technically proficient Benjamin Pavard tucks in to create a back three in the Bayern defence. The Frenchman, however, has proven to be competent in the final third as well this season; making five Bundesliga goal contributions.

The remarkable form of Davies, though, who’s swiftly established himself as potentially the world’s best left-back in a matter of months, is what has boosted the Die Roten duo up to second in this list.

1. Trent Alexander-Arnold & Andy Robertson

Andrew Robertson,Trent Alexander-Arnold

I mean, if you’re the two finest full-backs on the planet it’d be pretty hard to not to recognise the Liverpool duo as the best full-back pairing on the planet.

While the impact of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson on Jurgen Klopp’s Reds is unquestionable, we can’t underestimate just how important this full-back tandem is.

Klopp’s functional midfield allows these two to serve as Liverpool’s fourth and fifth attackers in what’s usually a 2-3-5 attacking build-up; with Robertson’s determined surges down the left and Alexander-Arnold’s awe-inspiring delivery key in the Reds’ multi-faceted attack.

While the pair have contributed to 22 Premier League goal contributions this term, their brilliance was on particular display in the 4-0 rout over Leicester back in December. On that night, switches of play between the two proved so deadly against a naive Foxes outfit.

On This Day in Football History – April 18: Messi Magic, Champions League Thrillers & More

April is usually one of the best months of the football calendar, as clubs enter a crucial point of the season. The Champions League reaches its quarter-final stage, countries play the semi-finals of their domestic competitions and the FA Cup returns to Wembley Stadium.

But of course, this year is completely different. There’s not one trace of football across the world, and all we can do is reminisce and look back on some of the classic moments we have seen over the years.

In light of that, 90min looks at what happened in the world of football on this day, on 18 April.

?1990 – Wojciech Szczesny Is Born

Wojciech Szczesny

18 April marks the birthday of Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who this year turns 30. The Poland international is at the peak of his power now, having spent most of the previous one at Arsenal, as well as loan spells at Brentford and Roma.

Szczesny has enjoyed a successful career for club and country, earning almost half a century of caps for Poland. He has picked up seven trophies so far, including two Serie A titles with the Bianconeri and two FA Cups during his stint in north London.

2001 – Bayern Reach CL Semi-Final

Paulo Sergio

Bayern Munich met Manchester United in a mouth-watering quarter-final clash, in a repeat of the 1999 final. Two years later, Die Roten had won the first leg 1-0 at Old Trafford, and returned to the Olympiastadion with a golden advantage.

Giovane Elber gave the Germans an early lead in Munich, before Mehmet Scholl put the tie to bed. Ryan Giggs pulled one back after the break but Bayern had already done the damage, winning 3-1 on aggregate and going on to win the Champions League that season.

2007 – Lionel Messi Scores His Greatest Goal

13 years ago, Lionel Messi scored arguably his greatest ever goal against Getafe in the 2007 Copa del Rey semi-final. Just 19 year -old, the Argentine magician picked up the ball in his own half and took on the entire visiting team.

One player turned into two, then three, four and eventually six players, none of which could stop Messi. He dazzled his way around the goalkeeper and coolly tucked it home, scoring a quite simply astounding goal which echoed the greatness of Diego Maradona himself.

2009 – Chelsea Book FA Cup Final Spot

Chelsea's French player Florent Malouda

Chelsea faced Arsenal in an all-London FA Cup semi-final in 2009, as Guus Hiddink’s Blues looked to reach their fourth final in nine years. It couldn’t have started worse for the blue half of Wembley however, when Theo Walcott struck first for the Gunners.

The Blues drew level through Florent Malouda, before an 84th minute winner from none other than Didier Drogba booked their spot in the final. Chelsea went on to win the final against Everton, securing their fifth FA Cup triumph.

2012 – Didier Drogba Beats Barcelona

Chelsea's Ivorian forward Didier Drogba

That FA Cup semi-final victory isn’t the only thing that makes 18 April special for Blues fans – it’s not even top of the list. The 2012 Champions League run saw Barcelona return to Stamford Bridge in the semi-final, Chelsea desperate for revenge for their 2009 exit.

It was a tense yet thrilling encounter at the Bridge, settled by a clinical finish from Drogba just before the break to seal a 1-0 victory. Chelsea took the valuable lead to the Camp Nou, made it to the final in Munich and the rest, of course, is history.

2017 – Real Madrid Pull Off Extra Time Heroics

Cristiano Ronaldo

2017 saw another classic Champions League quarter-final, when Real Madrid played Bayern Munich for a place in the final four. Los Blancos returned to Spain with a 2-1 win in the first leg, but Bayern struck back to level the aggregate score in Madrid.

With Die Roten leading 2-1 on the night and the score tied at 3-3 on aggregate, it went to extra time at the Bernabeu. Real ran riot to seal their place in the semi-final, with a goal from Marco Asensio and a Cristiano Ronaldo brace wrapping up a superb triumph.

8 of the Best Bundesliga Signings of the Season

?Prior to football’s suspension, the stage was set for one of the most dramatic ends to a Bundesliga season in recent memory.

A rejuvenated Borussia Dortmund, a revolutionary RB Leipzig and plucky underdogs Borussia Monchengladbach were all still in the running to pip reigning champions Bayern Munich for the title.

A key reason for this power shift has been the smart recruitment of the chasing pack, which has helped to close the gap on Die Roten. That and Niko Kovac being a bit overwhelmed by the size of the job, of course.

With so many good signings to choose from, whittling down them all down to the cream of the chop was always going to be tough task. But we love a challenge at 90min, and so without further ado, here are the eight best Bundesliga signings of the season.

Defenders

German DFB Pokal"FC Schalke 04 v Bayern Munchen"

Benjamin Pavard (Bayern Munich)? With Bayern Munich’s defenders dropping like flies to injury, Benjamin Pavard has been deployed in several different roles this season – and excelled in each of them.

Brought in from Stuttgart in the summer for £31.5m, the World Cup winner has been ever present for side who have conceded the least goals in the Bundesliga. He’s also not missed a single second of ?Champions League action.

Expect to see him marshalling the ?Bayern defence for many years to come.

Marvin Friedrich (Union Berlin): Despite being the coolest football club in the history of the world, minnows Union Berlin were  not expected to survive this season. However, Die Eisernen have defied expectation and currently sit 11th in the table, comfortably clear of relegation.

Their net spend of £18m was the among the lowest in the division and they used the money well. The pick of the bunch has been Marvin Friedrich who they signed from Augsburg for under £2m.

The big German – who plays in the middle of his side’s back three – has only missed two games all season. His 89 aerial duels won is also just 11 shy of the much more expensive Mats Hummels. What a bargain

Ozan Kabak

Ozan Kabak (Schalke): Young centre-backs don’t grow on trees right? Well, turns out in Turkey, they kind of do. Caglar Soyuncu, Merih Demiral, and now Ozan Kabak.

Schalke forked out £13.5m to pry Kabak away from relegated Stuttgart in the summer and it has proved to be a sound investment. The 20-year-old has come on leaps and bounds under David Wagner’s tutelage, making 19 league appearances in a side with a fairly impressive defensively record – those 5-0 defeats to Bayern and Leipzig aside.

He’s still a bit rough around the edges but ?Premier League clubs are already starting to form a disorderly queue for his services. They’ll surely have to pay a lot more than £13.5m as well.

Midfielder

Julian Brandt

Julian Brandt (Borussia Dortmund)?: Snapped up for a modest £22.5m from Bayer Leverkusen, the versatile Julian Brandt’s fine performances have somewhat flown under the radar.

Since moving into central midfield in November, the German has added guile and creativity to the ?Dortmund ranks, often playing a key role in his side’s fluid counter-attacks.

Statistically, he has not come close to the ridiculous season he enjoyed last term but the 23-year-old has shown signs of maturity this season. His future lies in midfield, not shafted out on the wing.

Forwards

Marcus Thuram

Marcus Thuram (Borussia Monchengladbach): Son of France World Cup winner Lillian, Marcus Thuram has been one of the standout players for surprise package Borussia Monchengladbach.

Operating as a number nine or left-sided forward, the 22-year-old has struck up a telepathic connection with compatriot Alassane Plea, with the pair’s goals firing Die Fohlen to the top of the table in 2019.

Physically imposing and devilishly intelligent, Thuram is also disciplined enough to set the tone of Marco Rose’s famed high press. Hopefully his talents can be appreciated by a more mainstream audience in the Champions League next season.

Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Dortmund): ?Though his brother Eden’s transfer to ?Real Madrid stole the headlines in the summer, Thorgan Hazard’s move to Dortmund has proved to be an altogether smarter piece of business.

Brought in from Gladbach for just shy of £23m, the Belgian hit the ground running by racking up five assists in his first seven matches. His fine form continued thereafter and in the final game before football’s suspension he opened the scoring in BVB’s 2-1 victory over his former club. That must have felt good.

UEFA Champions League"Red Bull Leipzig v Tottenham Hotspur FC"

?Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig): RB Leipzig brought in two exciting, young wingers in the summer, Ademola Lookman and Christopher Nkunku. While the former ?Everton man has limped through his first full Bundesliga campaign, Nkunku has been unstoppable.

?Signed for just £11.7m from Paris Saint-Germain, he opened his scoring account for Leipzig just four minutes into his debut – a sign of things to come.

The 22-year-old’s combination of pace and trickery have yielded a remarkable 15 assists and a few screamers to boot. His dead ball delivery is also one of the best in the league.

Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund): ?He may have only joined in January, but Erling Haaland is far and away the best signing on this list.

Snapped up for a ludicrous £18m, the Norwegian’s debut was like something out of a video game. Brought on in the 56th minute with Dortmund 3-1 down against Augsburg, Haaland completed a 23 minute hat-trick to secure his side a vital three points.

The goals have continued to flow since then and this ?Frankenstein’s monster of a striker will have plenty more scoring records in his sights for when football return. What. A. Player.

Denis Zakaria: Assessing the Candidates and Where He Should Go This Summer

One of Europe’s hottest yet underrated talents, Denis Zakaria could be on the move very soon. The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder and Switzerland international has gained attention across the continent, thanks to his consistent and eye-catching displays.

His excellent form in the Bundesliga sees Monchengladbach sitting fourth, while he has been a key player for Vladimir Petkovic’s Schweizer Nati in midfield. Now, Europe’s giants are knocking on the door, eager to sign the Swiss.

With a number of top European clubs in contention to sign the 23-year-old, 90min looks at some of the teams chasing Zakaria and where he should go.

Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone

Not a name you’d necessarily expect to see, but Atletico Madrid have been linked to Zakaria. According to Sky Sport Deutschland, Los Colchoneros have the Swiss on their radar and are interested in signing him, the only Spanish side who have been mentioned.

Diego Simeone uses two central midfielders in his 4-4-2 system, usually the impressive duo of Saul Niguez and the combatitive Thomas Partey. Where Zakaria would fit in is hard to know without one leaving, though Partey has been linked with a move away in recent months.

Would he fit? In terms of Atletico’s shape and formation, definitely. But Simeone’s side play very defensive football and are renowned for how organised and hard to break down they are. Zakaria can defend but has a much more attacking mindset, one which wouldn’t fit at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Should he join? No. The prospect of playing in Spain at one of the best clubs in the country is an exciting one, but Zakaria can do much better and find a side he really fits in to, rather than changing the style that has earned so many plaudits.

Suitability Rating: 4/10

Likelihood Rating: 3/10

Manchester United

Manchester United v Everton FC - Premier League

The number one name in contention to sign Zakaria is Manchester United, who are leading the race to sign him. The Red Devils have been linked with him for a while, closely watching his contract situation at Monchengladbach.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperately needs reinforcements at Old Trafford, and the Swiss could be exactly what he needs. United certainly have the repertoire and the money to bring Zakaria, and the German side surely wouldn’t reject an offer from them.

Would he fit? He could fit in nicely to United’s midfield, playing behind Bruno Fernandes and alongside an experienced player like Nemanja Matic or fellow youngster Scott McTominay. He would be suited to their shape and style of play, possibly slotting in very well and certainly excelling in the ?Premier League.

Should he join? No. It would be hard to turn down United and the prospects of playing in the Premier League, but United simply aren’t the same team they used to be. Zakaria would be a wasted talent at Old Trafford, and he could see his career brought to a halt if he moves there.

Suitability Rating: 5/10

Likelihood Rating: 7/10

Bayern Munich

Thomas Mueller,Denis Zakaria

Whenever there’s a hot prospect impressing in Germany, Bayern Munich are on the scene. The German giants always examine their own league when looking for new signings, and unsurprisingly Zakaria has been linked with a move to Bavaria.

He could really develop himself as a top-level footballer at one of the best clubs in the world, while learning from some of the best midfielders.

Would he fit? His defensive powers combined with his strength going forward certainly suits him to Bayern’s ruthless style, making him a real asset to their squad. He could fit in and develop himself in midfield, wherever Hans-Dieter Flick plays him.

Should he join? Maybe. Zakaria would flourish at Bayern but only if given the opportunity, and while he would fit in it’s hard to know if he’d get enough game time. Die Roten already have a rich midfield, and the Swiss could struggle to find his way into the starting eleven.

Suitability Rating: 6/10

Likelihood Rating: 7/10

Liverpool

Anfield - Liverpool FC

Liverpool have now joined the race to acquire Zakaria, with Jurgen Klopp said to be a fan of the 23-year-old. The European champions certainly have the current pedigree to sign whoever they wish, and the Monchengladbach midfielder could make the step up.

The Reds have been tearing up Europe with a talented midfield trio, captain Jordan Henderson sitting right at the heart of it. Zakaria could be added to an exciting pool of options, while it has also been reported that he could come in as cover at centre-back.

Would he fit? Zakaria would excel in Liverpool’s midfield, and would be a useful part of an already outstanding team. The question is whether he would play, with Klopp already possessing a midfield full of talent and options galore.

Should he join? Maybe. It also seems hard to see Zakaria turning down the Reds, but if he would go to Anfield to simply be a rotation player and not make it into the first team, it simply isn’t worth it for a player too talented to sit on the bench.

Suitability Rating: 6/10

Likelihood Rating: 5/10

Borussia Dortmund

Jacob Bruun Larsen,Denis Zakaria

Another one of the top options that would keep Zakaria in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund are also interested in signing the midfielder. The Swiss would be right at home at the Signal Iduna Park, joining fellow countrymen Roman Burki, Manuel Akanji and Marwin Hitz.

Lucien Favre – another Swiss who could lure Zakaria to Dortmund – has built the Schwarzgelben around a solid midfield, currently made up by Axel Witsel and Emre Can. Zakaria may be tempted by staying in Germany, in what would be a short 100km journey across the country.

Would he fit? Zakaria would definitely fit in, and would benefit from the familiarities of the Bundesliga. He has already proved himself on German shores and shown what we could do, and would certainly do well were he to choose Dortmund.

Should he join? Maybe. BVB offer a comforting option to Zakaria and an exciting one, and while there may be more space for him there a move abroad may benefit him more. It’s a pleasant dilemma for the Swiss to have, one which he could be resolving in the summer.

Suitability Rating: 7/10

Likelihood Rating: 6/10

Kingsley Coman Set for Bayern Fine for Driving McLaren Car To Training Rather Than Audi

?Kingsley Coman will be fined by Bayern Munich for driving his McLaren car to training, breaching strict club rules.

Yep.

The 23-year-old arrived to training this week in his own car, rather than the Audi cars provided to all members of the first team squad. Having broken one of the club’s rules on the matter, he is now facing punishment.

Yep, this is seriously happening.

Kingsley Coman

According to German newspaper Bild, Coman will receive a €50,000 fine from Bayern for not adhering to the club rule.

They added that this is not the first time a similar situation has been seen at the club, with other players also doing the same. Jerome Boateng and Philippe Coutinho previously arrived in their Mercedes cars, while Niklas Sule once turned up in his own Ferrari.

Coman has responded to the club fine, explaining why he turned up in his McClaren. As quoted by the Evening Standard, he said: “I’d like to apologise to the club and Audi for not having come to training in my company car.

“The reason was a damaged wing mirror on my Audi. It still was a mistake.”

Audi are one of Bayern’s main partners, joining forces with Die Roten in 2002 and becoming shareholders nine years later. As part of the partnership, the German brand gift a new Audi car to every player at the start of the season, a tradition which has lasted for years.

Kingsley Coman

The stern club rules are synonymous with Bayern’s strict yet successful regime, one which continues to deliver trophies. The Bavarian side are currently four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, as they chase their 30th German league title.

Coman has been at Bayern since 2015, when he joined on a two-year loan from Italian giants Juventus. The deal was made permanent in 2017, with the Frenchman winning nine trophies since arriving in Bavaria five years ago.
