Bayern Munich 3-1 Augsburg: Ancelotti's side progress to third round of DFB-Pokal

The Bundesliga champions secured a place in the next round of the competition, despite an unconvincing performance

Julian Green scored his first competitive goal for Bayern Munich as Carlo Ancelotti’s side advanced to the third round of the DFB-Pokal with an ultimately comfortable 3-1 victory over Bavarian rivals Augsburg.

In the first of two meetings between the sides in the space of four days, promising youngster Green headed home 41 minutes into an eventful cup tie at the Allianz Arena, with Bayern having raced into an early lead courtesy of Philipp Lahm.

Augsburg had a chance to haul themselves back into the contest from the penalty spot early in the second half, but Manuel Neuer was in fine form to deny Koo Ja-cheol low to his left.

Thomas Muller should have put the result beyond doubt prior to the hour-mark, only for the German forward to blaze over from 12 yards out after Georg Teigl handled in Augsburg’s area.

Ji Dong-won’s terrific solo effort did apply some pressure on the hosts late on, but substitute David Alaba squeezed a thunderous strike past visiting goalkeeper Marwin Hitz in second-half stoppage time to ensure the defending champions went through.

Robert Lewandowski had to settle for a place on the bench, but Bayern did not miss the striker’s influence as Lahm put them ahead within two minutes.

After sitting out the 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend, Lahm got his return to Ancelotti’s line-up off to the ideal start when he fired home after combining excellently with Muller.

Bayern continued to dominate following the captain’s strike, ambitious efforts from Muller and Thiago Alcantara respectively almost extending their advantage.

Thiago was dictating the Bundesliga champions’ tempo as they continued to control proceedings, and he went close again when his deflected strike whistled wide.

But Bayern did double their tally four minutes before the interval, Muller again the provider as his cross found Green, whose header could not be kept out by Hitz.

Hitz atoned on the stroke of half-time, though, as he somehow kept out Mats Hummels’ effort from point-blank range.

Augsburg should have pulled one back three minutes after the restart, Gojko Kacar winning a soft penalty after going down under pressure from Hummels.

However, Koo was unable to beat Neuer from the spot and Daniel Baier could only fire wide after reaching the rebound first.

Augsburg then found themselves on the opposite end of a penalty decision 12 minutes into the second half, but Muller fired over after referee Sascha Stegemann pointed to the spot for Teigl’s blatant handball.

It looked like it could prove a costly miss in the 68th minute when Ji got the better of Jerome Boateng on the left-hand side of the box and thumped a stinging strike past Neuer.

However, the goal sparked Bayern back into life, Renato Sanches going close with a looping header before Thiago drilled narrowly wide.

Ancelotti’s side made sure of their place in round three in the 93rd minute when Arturo Vidal played in fellow substitute Alaba, who hammered a venomous strike past Hitz to add gloss to the victory.

Sacchi warns Bayern players over Ancelotti temper

The 70-year-old has warned the Bundesliga champions that the Italian coach will not always be ‘Mr Nice Guy’

Former Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi has stressed Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti is more than capable of getting angry when the situation calls for it.

Ancelotti is renowned for his somewhat loose approach and some questioned his style after Bayern went through a rough patch at the start of the month.

Nevertheless, Sacchi has made it clear Ancelotti is not always the nice guy he appears to be.

“I have seen him furious a fair few times, both as a player and as a coach,” Sacchi told Sport Bild.

“Carlo can get angry if the situation calls for it.

Muller: Van Gaal my biggest influence

“Carlo knows what he has to do. He knows when he has to be nice, show his players affection and when he has to tighten the leash a bit.

“We are talking about a coach who has been coaching the best teams in the world for 20 years or so and who has won loads of silverware. He can adapt to any situation.”

Ancelotti worked under Sacchi at AC Milan between 1987 and 1991 during his playing days, before serving as his assistant at Italy’s national team between 1992 and 1995.

Kimmich draws inspiration from Xavi

The Bayern Munich youngster says that the former Barcelona captain was his role model when he was growing up, also mentioning his club skipper Philipp Lahm

Bayern Munich youngster Joshua Kimmich has revealed he drew inspiration from Barcelona legend Xavi growing up and has nothing but praise for the for the iconic ex-Spain midfielder.

Kimmich, 21, has developed into an important first-team player at Bayern since joining the club from Stuttgart in 2015 and has already netted seven goals in 12 appearances this term.

“Xavi was my role model growing up,” Kimmich told the official UEFA website.

“He was a very, very good footballer, technically very good, a leader. He can lead a team and he is an absolute team player.

“He knows exactly how to combine with his team-mates and always puts himself at the service of them.

“And I also see him as a role model because he did not have the same physical presence as others in terms of size.”

Kimmich not getting carried away

Kimmich has been playing alongside experienced defender Philipp Lahm at Bayern and says the former Germany star is another important figure to him.

He added: “Philipp is a role model for me. There are very few players in world football who show the same level of consistency as Philipp.

“I can’t think of three bad performances from him, and that’s a quality not many players have. Players are always judged on their bad games, and in Philipp’s case there are almost none.”

Bayern Munich have began the Bundesliga season as they finished the last one in complete control of the division, despite the change in manager over the summer. Carlo Ancelotti has picked up right where Pep Guardiola left off as the Bavaria-based club have won all five of their matches to begin the campaign.

Bayern are aiming to win the Bundesliga for a fifth-straight season, and already look irrepressible in their bid for the German top-flight crown, despite the quality shown by Borussia Dortmund. As a result, the club are backed in the latest Bundesliga betting odds at 1/7 to win the title, and Ancelotti’s men have got off to the perfect start for their assault on the league.

One of the major factors that has helped the club create a stranglehold on the division is their recruitment, which was highlighted in their move for Mats Hummels from bitter rivals Dortmund along with the signing of one of the most promising players in Europe – Renato Sanches.

Hummels has gone straight into the team and not only provides strength at the back next to his Germany international team-mate Jerome Boateng, but his departure significantly weakened Thomas Tuchel’s side, who were left scrambling for a replacement.

Bayern already had the strongest squad in the division, with the firepower of Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller leading the line. Both strikers have scored a mountain of goals for the club since combining their talents in 2014 in a partnership that strikes fear into the hearts of every defence in the league.

Ancelotti’s team’s greatest strength is their midfield where they have an embarrassment of riches, which has only be increased by the performances of rising star Joshua Kimmich. The 21-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant start to the campaign, scoring two goals in his new role after being pushed forward by the Italian from full-back.

His passing ability and movement, especially in the final third has added further potency to Bayern’s game. The sight will please Ancelotti as between Kimmich and Sanches he could have two of the brightest prospects in the game at his disposal for many years to come.

For all of their brilliance, one aspect that can never be overlooked is experience. Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben have had a torrid time with injuries over the past couple of years, and it’s testament to Bayern’s skills in the transfer market and quality on the pitch that they have dominated even without the presence of the duo.

Both players were the stars of the Bayern team that drove their side to their triumph over Dortmund in 2013 in the Champions League final. However, their fitness problems have limited their impact, with both men reduced to playing roles from the bench.

Ribery showed signs that he still has the potential to play a crucial role for the club even at the age of 33 when he replaced Kingsley Coman in his side’s clash against Hamburg. The Frenchman came off the bench in the second half and caused havoc down the left wing, creating Kimmich’s late strike that handed Ancelotti’s men the three points. The result proved Bayern’s incredible strength in depth and proved that it will take a momentous achievement to overhaul them at the top of the Bundesliga this term.

Griezmann will still take penalties – Simeone

The France international saw a late effort crash against the bar, but his coach pointed out that even the best players in the world sometime err from the spot

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann will continue taking penalties despite his latest miss, coach Diego Simeone said.

Griezmann put his 84th-minute spot-kick against the crossbar, but Atletico still claimed a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.

A first-half goal by Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, set up by Griezmann, was enough for the LaLiga giants.

Atletico down Bayern in Champions League clash

Atletico have taken three penalties in their last four Champions League games, failing to score any of them – with two missed by Griezmann.

“[Diego] Maradona, [Lionel] Messi, [Michel] Platini and Zico have all missed penalties. Griezmann will carry on taking them,” Simeone said, via UEFA.

“We are very happy with his work. He started the counter-attack for the goal and he did a thousand things.

“For me, he is in amongst the best forwards in the world.”

Carrasco’s pinpoint finish in the 35th minute proved the match-winner for Simeone’s side.

The Argentinian was also full of praise for midfielder Koke, saying: “We have been working with Koke for the last two years, moving him more inside.

“He is looking more natural there and seems to be the boss in there. It works well and he enables the team recover the ball much more quickly.”
