Xavi could play until he's 50, says Javi Martinez

The veteran looks set to move to Qatar in the summer but his former international team-mate says he’s capable of playing at the highest level for a long time

Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez says Barcelona star Xavi is that good he could play until he’s 50.

The 35-year-old has been strongly linked with a move away from the Camp Nou side this season, with Qatari outfit Al Sadd and the MLS being touted as potential destinations.

Javi Martinez feels the former Spain man still has plenty to offer, though, and hopes he will not leave the Spanish top flight just yet.

“Xavi, with his quality, could play until he is 50,” the Bayern man told Sport.

“I spent several years with him in the national team and I learned a lot from him. For Barcelona and for Spanish football it is a pleasure to have him.

“I don’t know if it’s official that he will leave Barcelona or not, but it’s a shame that players like him have to grow old.”

The Spain international then went on to praise Andres Iniesta ahead of the first leg of Bayern’s Champions League semi-final tie with Barcelona next week.

“Iniesta can decide any match, he always sees things differently.

“It is the same in the national team, but Barca have many top players and they all need to be watched carefully.”
